    Color Chart: 1994 Audi RS2

The Audi RS2 Avant remains the stuff of fantasy thanks to its limited production by Porsche and its form as an Audi station wagon. Paired with quattro all-wheel drive, the car reached legend status as tuned versions outran supercars like the Ferrari F40 in period.

We’ve gotten our hands on the 1994 product catalogue via AutoCatalogArchive.com and so are able to index each of the standard colors for that year. Some Audi specially painted models are known to exist in this time when Audi exclusive was a very rare thing. Most of those deviating cars appear to be using the Audi Lifestyle Colors, though we’ve always wondered if Porsche had built any Paint to Sample versions in their own hues.

As we run across either, we’ll highlight them here on this blog, but here are the standard colors for now. Worth noting, the scan of this catalogue is not terribly true-to-color, so we’re using this more as a reference of what colors were offered as standard and not what those colors look like on the actual cars.

Color Chart: German Market MY2019 Porsche 911 Speedster Catalogue

When you think of a car as exclusive as the 2019 Porsche 911 (991.2) Speedster, you probably assume that anyone with the positioning to have had a build slot and the means to pay for the car more than likely would have commissioned their own unique specification… or at least a Paint to Sample finish. Well, if you’d assumed that you’d be wrong as we’ve gotten our hands on the 2019 model catalogue and were intrigued to see there was a standard color palette listed. In as much, it’ the latest in our weekly Color Chart series.

Frankly, we may have even been more surprised that in 2019 there was a product catalogue. Manufacturers have moved increasingly to better and better configurator tools on their websites, allowing you to simulate very specific option configurations and even some Paint to Sample simulations. That’s all remarkable of course, but when manufacturers like Porsche move on from an older generation car like the 991.2, the specifics of those configurations seem to get lost to time… at least those configurators become lost as a reference. In those cases you have to go old school and find a model catalogue, a task that’s getting harder and harder to accomplish given highly complex configurators are a lot cheaper to build and distribute than printed catalogues. Perhaps the happy medium then is the PDF catalogue.

For that we turned to one of our favorite references autocatalogarchive.com. There, amidst their seriously deep collection of Porsche catalogues, we found a 2019 Speedster book. Using that as a reference, we’re able to list the colors offered on the 2019 Speedster. See those below, or go directly to the MY2019 Porsche 991.2 Speedster catalogue HERE.

  • Color Chart: Audi TT (Mk1) Launch Palette

Color Chart: Audi TT (Mk1) Launch Palette

Back in 1999, the arrival of the Audi TT was nothing short of momentous. Audi had shown concept car versions of the car, an Auto Union inspired sports coupe with clean Bauhaus design and Porsche 356-like proportions, and in five years brought it largely unchanged to production based on the Volkswagen Group’s transverse so-called A-architecture. The car very quickly garnered instant design icon and rockstar status, so bringing it to market successfully was key for Audi. It’s in that context we consider this color chart.

What you see here are scans from one of the U.S. market launch year catalogues for the TT. Even with the catalogue, the TT creatively broke from the normal and traditional catalogue designs of the Audi brand and tried something fun, with a sketch of the front of the car on the cover and pierced with large holes where the launch color palette could be seen.

Nowadays, there are more popular colors in the Audi exclusive range, but some of them like Nimbus Grey still make an appearance in current models. Interestingly, though perhaps the best known of colors or shades on those early Audi TT models since it was featured on the TTS concept and often paired with iconic baseball glove stitched leather seats, Nimbus Grey is not seen on this color chart.

And, for those seeking significant yet obscure historical colors as they finalize their specification on a new car, we wanted to bring each of these to the fore.

MY2000 launch year colors for the TT seen here include:

    Brilliant Black

    Lake Silver Metallic

    Denim Blue Pearl Effect

    Amulet Red

    Trapper Yellow

    Talisman Green Metallic

    Desert Green Pearl Effect

    Aviator Grey Pearl Effect

Researching a Market Find 1974 Ferrari Dino GT4, we dug into period correct hues from Maranello and ran across this color chart from Piaggio Paint. It was identified as 1974 to 1985, and includes many different colors. From there, we think we have the Dino identified.

For now, we’ve done our best to normalize the shading on the pages and added them into our Color Chart series for overall reference. With 86 colors on the sheet, prepare for a ton of color tags entered into our system at the bottom.

Color Chart: 1969 Jaguar Standard Colors and Trim

Continuing in our series of cataloguing factory colors is this vintage Jaguar Color Guide dated April 1969. While these would have been standard colors, it’s fascinating to look back on both what was offered and perhaps have vintage colors such as these resurrected for modern specifications.

    The book reads:

The color finishes illustrated and combinations described are those which will be available from April 1969. Jaguar Cars Limited reserve the right to alter or withdraw any color finish without notice. The patters are intended to serve primarily as a guide and whilst they approximate closely to the actual colors used, they should not be utilized for the purpose of paint matching or for any other purpose where complete accuracy is essential.

Paint colors Include: Cream, Warwick Grey, Ascot Fawn (maybe the most Jaguar color name ever), Willow Green, Dark Blue, Black, Sable, Light Blue, Regency Red, British Racing Green, Pale Primrose and Signal Red.

Color Chart: 1994 / 1995 Audi Lifestyle Colors

With this new Color Chart series, we’re aiming to catalogue even more paint colors from various periods. First up is this 1994 and 1995 model year mix from Audi labeled as Lifestyle colors and they’re an interesting mix of often intense colors.

In 1994 and 1995, Audi was on the ropes. Porsche was about to launch the RS2, which was very special indeed, but Audi as a brand was challenged to come up with a freshened range of cars that could rekindle the market attention that had waned since the retirement of the original “ur” quattro.

Audi exclusive was in its infancy, and special colors like these had been chosen by the brand’s design team as something special to juice sales and interest in the cars. A contact from that time who worked at the Simi Valley Design Studio even suggests studio chief J. Mays had ordered his own company car in Inca Yellow as seen in this chart.

    Colors include:

    Inka Yellow Pearl Effect (9963)

    Purple Red Pearl Effect (9025)

    Pelican Blue Metallic (9029)

    Aquarell Green Metallic (9027)

    Tropic Green Metallic (9028)

    Cricket Green Pearl Effect (9944)

    Europa Blue Pearl Effect (Y3Y3)

    Volcano Black Pearl Effect (W9W9)

    Byzanz Metallic (9063)

    Rubin Red (X6X6)

    Brilliant Violet (L3L3)
