Having been most notably applied to late production 993 (1997) and early production 996 (up to 2000) models, Porsche’s Paint to Sample Ocean Blue Metallic is a stunner that flies incredibly far under the radar. Similar enough to Lapiz Blue that we’d not fault you for being mistaken, Ocean is deeper, darker and much less common. We’d love to see it again in the future, and are happy to document it here on Tailored Driver.

    Why we love it:

The 997.2 Turbo S is, in most cases, a Porsche model which wears the ‘good value’ for money badge proudly. Enthusiasts have overlooked the shocking performance due to a lack of engagement from the PDK-only transmission, and as such the 997 Turbo S can often be had for a song- even more so should it’s roof be made of fabric rather than metal. This Tailored Driver is not one of those ‘value’ examples, but when it comes to spec, this is incredibly enticing. Paint to Sample Mexico Blue was a bold choice in 2011, but it works, especially when juxtaposed with Yellow brake calipers and silver center lock wheels. All of this is to say there’s plenty of ‘value’ in this blue chip Turbo S even if the price is a bit high compared to others in market. We think when appreciation for this variant hits, it’ll hit incredibly hard.

    Why we love it:
In 2014, Porsche celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the 911 with a special “50th Anniversary Edition” model that utilized the then-wider body of the 991. 1963 were built to this specification, most easily recognizable for their Fuchs style wheels, houndstooth seats, and only available in either darker Graphite Grey (graphitgrau; non-metallic UNI; C2C2; Porsche) or lighter Geyser Grey. And while all of those had the base 911 drivetrain, Porsche also specially built a Graphite Grey Turbo S 50th Anniversary Edition for none other than Jerry Seinfeld. That car is currently up for sale on Bring a Trailer.

In total, Seinfeld’s 911 50th Anniversary specification applied to this Turbo S added approximately $58,000 in options to the standard Turbo S. In addition to the aforementioned paint, this included things like Sport Plus front seats with houndstooth inserts, PDK gearbox, Sport Chrono Package, 20-inch Sport Classic alloy wheels, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCBs), an electronic limited-slip differential in the rear, LED headlights, ParkAsssist, Burmeister audio system, and automatic climate control.

Consistent with the 911 50th Anniversary Edition, it also got 50th Anniversary badging and clear taillights. Interestingly, the underside of the trunk is also signed by Tony Hatter, then Porsche Head of Design.

It is believed to be the only factory built 2014 911 50th Anniversary Turbo S. Combine that with the fame of the original owner of this single-owner 911 and you have a very special car for any serious Porsche collector.

Aimé Leon Dore‘s custom Porsche 993 Turbo Pays Homage to New York

The New York-based fashion and lifestyle brand Aimé Leon Dore (ALD) unveils the bespoke Porsche 993 Turbo – the fifth classic model restored in its long-standing partnership with Porsche.

    [source: Porsche AG]

Renowned for its unparalleled engineering and timeless design, the Porsche 993 Turbo is hailed as one of the greatest sports cars in history. It combines the final iteration of the air-cooled engines with a powerful twin-turbo powertrain that set a new standard for performance, handling, and durability. Aimé Leon Dore’s restoration goes beyond aesthetics, delivering both a visual and technical revival of the celebrated classic.

Porsche 993 Turbo by Aimé Leon Dore

During an intensive development process, for a sportier look, elements from the 993 Turbo S were incorporated, including the iconic Turbo S spoiler, which provides both a visual enhancement and increased downforce. Additionally, the 993 Turbo S Exhaust and Front Splitter were fitted to improve aerodynamics, elevating the car’s performance and aggressive front-end design.

The 18-inch Porsche Turbo Twist rims were finished in Mulberry Green to match the exterior, highlighted with a gold accent encircling the rims. Michelin, Porsche’s trusted tire partner known for outfitting the seven-time title-winning Porsche 963, provided 18″ Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires specifically for the 993 Turbo.

It’s great to see the latest installment of our partnership with Aimé Leon Dore”, says Deniz Keskin, Director Brand Management and Partnerships at Porsche AG. “The 993 is an iconic member of the 911 family and dream car for so many enthusiasts all around the world. ALD’s take is a wonderful way of contributing to that enduring legacy.”

Aimé Leon Dore’s refined design language extends to the interior, featuring dark brown leather, lambswool accents, and hardback seats. The seat backrests are painted in Mulberry Green, echoing the car’s exterior. Dark brown carpets, floor mats, seats, and instrument cluster were selected for a cohesive, monochromatic look. The steering wheel and headrests display a custom Aimé Leon Dore and Porsche logo, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the two brands. A custom brass Unisphere gear knob brings a distinctive and personal touch to the interior. The door sills also feature the inscription “A team from outta Queens with the American dream,” a nod to the brand’s roots and the inspiration behind Aimé Leon Dore’s brand.

Exclusive capsule collection with Porsche Design

Inspired by the exclusive Mulberry Green Porsche 993 Turbo, the capsule collection features a range of apparel and accessories, including the long-awaited Leather Club Jacket.

“It has been a refreshing experience to work on this capsule with the ALD team”, says Nicola Ader, Director Marketing & PR Porsche Lifestyle Group. “The result is the perfect match for the car and a great way for both communities around the world to become part of this project.”

The capsule collection will be available on November 22nd both in-store and online at Aimé Leon Dore.

For the first time, Porsche Design of America will also offer a select range from the limited-edition capsule, available exclusively on the West Coast at the Porsche Design Store in Beverly Hills.

    Why we love it:

We see a lot of blue Porsches, and we even see a lot of Paint to Sample Porsches, but we don’t see a lot of Albert Blue Porsches. We also don’t see a lot of non-metallic dark and almost navy blue colors, making it even more unique. Albert Blue is believed to have first dropped in 1970 on the F-type “long hood” 911s, and specifying it as was done here is a great nod to a lesser known hue from the Porsche history books.

This 911 Turbo S Cabriolet continues its throwback nod on the inside where the Heritage Design Interior pairs black/semi-aniline pepita (a.k.a. houndstooth) fabric with rich cognac leather. There’s a long list of adds on this car as you’ll see via the link or the Monroney label listed above. The car’s also a enrolled in Porsche’s Certified Pre-Owned program, meaning extra piece of mind.

  • Color Check: Paint to Sample X Blue on Porsche 911 Turbo S Lightweight “000” Commission at Porsche Main Line

Color Check: Paint to Sample X Blue on Porsche 911 Turbo S Lightweight “000” Commission at Porsche Main Line

Porsche is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 911 Turbo this year, and 000 Magazine is doing the same this coming weekend with their Turbo 50 celebration at Summit Skywalker Ranch. Given that, it’s worth celebrating this X Blue 911 Turbo S owned by Drew Coblitz, purchased through Porsche Main Line. It is reportedly the first delivered 911 Turbo S “000 Commission” and was recently detailed more specifically by @PTSRS.

Given all that, let’s dig into the details. For starters, the X Blue (xblau; non-metallic UNI; Z91; Porsche) color is Paint to Sample and non-metallic. This blue is a modern blue formulation created for the 911 (992.1) Belgian Legends Edition created in 2020 to honor Jacky Ickx 75th birthday. It’s a solid blue that is reportedly darker than Dark Sea Blue and is offered on the 911 and Taycan. Given the Ickx association, it’s quite likely it also harks the dark blue of Rothman’s Racing liveries his Porsches wore in races such as the Paris-Dakar Rally or 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Side Note: @PTSRS has an interesting indexing format for paints seen here (name; type; code), and we’re going to adopt that with the addition of brand (name; type; code; brand) since we cover more than just Porsche. The intention is to adopt more universal standardization of paint code identity when we know the code and type. In this case, it’s (xblau; non-metallic UNI; Z91; Porsche).

Back to the 000 Commission specification, it’s based on an “off the menu” mix created to be built in conjunction with the a 911 Turbo S with factory Lightweight Package. From there, special wishes details were chosen along a theme celebrating David Donner‘s victory at the 100th Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb. In that race, Donner’s 9 minutes 53 second record run was performed in a 000 Magazine liveried 911 Turbo S #000. A creative mix of details and easter eggs thanks to ample deployment of Sonderwunsch services complete the specification.

@PTSRS inventories the Sonderwunsch details as such:

    • Laser-etched “000” on Front Bumper Grille as on Pikes Peak Winner
    • Exterior Mirrors in Carmine Red as on Pikes Peak Winner
    • “Peak 100” Logo Decals on Doors
    • 000 Decal under Rear Wing as on Pikes Peak Winner
    • Illuminated Door-Sill Guards in Matte Carbon with 000 Logo
    • Center Armrest embossed with Pikes Peak course map and “9:53”
    • Custom Dashboard Inlay denoting #000 911 Turbo S’s Class Win and PPIHC Certified Course Time
    • Derpy in the Fuel Cap

For a client to order an “000 Commission”, they must build from a 911 Turbo S Coupe allocation, adding the Lightweight Package, Full Bucket Seats or 18-way Sport Seats Plus, 20/21-inch 911 Turbo S Exclusive Design wheels, Wheel Inlays Painted High Gloss Black and Calipers in High Gloss Black.

From there, they can coordinate with their Porsche dealer to create a Sonderwunsch order with the factory. And while the “000 Commission” can be ordered on any color 911 Turbo S so-fitted, they’ll also need a Paint to Sample allocation if they wish to do special paint like the Coblitz X Blue car.

  • RML Group’s Latest Le Mans Hypercar-Inspired P39 Project

RML Group’s Latest Le Mans Hypercar-Inspired P39 Project

Typically when we talk remasters, we’re talking about exacting reimagining of iconic and also vintage cars. In the case of RML Group and their Le Mans though, it’s a reinvention of the current 992.1 Porsche 911 Turbo S. RML takes Porsche’s most potent Turbo and dials it up to hypercar levels with its modern reimagining, and until Porsche builds a modern 911 GT2, the Le Mans definitely fits a niche.

In as much, we’re including RML in our remasters series. While we’re not seeking to cover everything in the aftermarket as a “remaster”, we are choosing firms doing formulaic and tailored augmentation of iconic cars. We think this qualifies, though given these all appear to be renderings for now, will save our final impressions for when we finally see one in person. In the meantime, read the full press release below.

    • All-new new carbon body has active aero and DRS
    • Chassis features longer wheelbase, wider track, hydraulic height adjustor
    • Engine extensively tuned to produce more than 900bhp and 1,000Nm
    • Projected Nordschleife lap time faster than a 992 GT3RS*
    • P39 40th Special Edition limited to 10 examples worldwide

Wellingborough, Northants October 16, 2024 – RML Group Ltd, the UK’s leading high-performance engineering specialist, today unveils first production details of its bespoke P39 project.

Merging Le Mans Hypercar design and daily road-car usability, the P39 40th Special Edition (40SE) delivers an unrivalled blend of RML’s championship-winning expertise and engineering excellence.

Based on the Porsche 992.1 Turbo S, the RML P39 40SE upgrades every area affecting performance, ride and handling. The net result is an extraordinary hypercar that has track capability beyond a Porsche 992 GT3 RS* yet maintains a high level of compliance and day-to-day usability.

Michael Mallock, CEO of RML Group, said: ‘What better way to showcase our leadership on road and track over 40 years than with the launch of a Le Mans Hypercar-inspired hypercar?

‘Our new RML P39 40th Special Edition challenges everything that’s possible in this sector,’ he added. ‘It will comfortably eclipse a GT3 RS* at the Nordschleife while being relaxing and easy to drive all the way home again.’

To expand the car’s handling abilities, P39 40SE’s track has been increased front and rear plus the wheelbase has been lengthened. The bodywork has been replaced by a carbon fibre shell inspired functionally and aesthetically by the new Le Mans Hypercar category.

This features front and rear active aero complete with an integrated, driver-activated drag reduction system (DRS) which reduces aerodynamic drag to boost speed on straights. Furthermore, the entire chassis can be remotely lowered to increase downforce via hydraulic actuators.

    In this configuration, P39 40SE generates an extraordinary 662kg of downforce – more than 4.5 times a standard 992.1 911 Turbo S at 150mph.

Making the most of this new-found ability, P39 40SE’s twin-turbo six-cylinder engine is taken to 900bhp at 7,300rpm and 1,000Nm of torque thanks to a new ECU, upgraded turbos and intercoolers, new manifolds and catalytic converters plus a tuned Inconel sports exhaust.

Using RML’s advanced simulation software, these upgrades translate to an anticipated Nordschleife lap time of 6min 45sec*. This compares with 7min 17sec for the standard 992.1 Turbo S and 6min 49sec for the GT3 RS.

Yet as focused and stiff as it is in Track Mode to achieve this scintillating speed, P39 40SE has two distinct modes or characters. With the car in driver-selected Tour Mode, the ride height increases, damping relaxes to make the car more compliant and everyday useable.

Inside, P39 40SE celebrates RML’s 40 years of engineering excellence with new sports seats and embroidery matched with four-point safety harnesses for both driver and passenger. The standard vestigial rear seat is removed and replaced with a custom half roll cage.

The package is completed with no-cost option RML 40SE Ruby Red paintwork and bespoke forged alloy sports rims – 20in at the front and 21in at the rear.

Just 10 examples of P39 40SE will be created at RML’s engineering centre at Wellingborough, near Silverstone, with the first already under construction.

P39 40SE is delivered as a completed vehicle, with each costing £495,000 excluding taxes plus the donor car. RML can source these, as required.

  • Market Find: Paint to Sample Racing Green Metallic 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe

Market Find: Paint to Sample Racing Green Metallic 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe

The 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe you see here isn’t just a sublime and interesting color, it’s also a qualified specimen to exemplify the extent at which one could tailor order a 911 Turbo directly from Porsche. Even better, it is so tastefully built in paint-to-sample Racing Green Metallic (racinggrünmetallic; metallic UNI; Y68; Porsche) with an Exclusive Manufaktur interior in Slate Grey.

This 8K-mile 911 Turbo S Coupe (VIN WP0AD2A95NS255837) left the factory with approximately $71,000 in options and upgrades, including SportDesign Package, the aforementioned Paint to Sample Racing Green bodywork and Exclusiv Manufaktur interior with adaptive Sport Plus seats in Slate Grey leather, Burmeister audio, Sport Chrono Package and additional leather and stitching everywhere you can imagine.

Not to be confused with Racing Green Metallic of the 997 era (22G), this Turbo’s Racing Green Metallic (Y68) is more commonly applied as of late, and appears to be either matching or heavily influenced by the current Racing Green utilized by Aston Martin in motorsport activities today, itself influenced by the metallic green on the Aston Martin Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori piloted to victory in the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Other equipment includes PDK dual clutch transmission, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, center-locking 20-inch and 21-inch Turbo S wheels, an Akrapovìc exhaust, front axle lift system, power steering plus and more.

Market Find: Paint to Sample Viola Metallic Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet

When ordered new back in 2005, the individual who ordered this Tailored Driver couldn’t have fathomed just how special their creation would be. In just a few years the 997 Turbo S would debut sporting a mandatory transmission that had yet to be discussed publicly, and still struggles for respect in certain circles to this day. The purple renaissance was also difficult to foresee while making sure your TiVo was set to record The Colbert Report’s premiere episode.

Despite those significant headwinds, this last-of-breed Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet (VIN: WP0CB299X5S675239) is exactly as you may have spec’d had you known what was to come- Paint to Sample Viola Metallic, a 6 speed manual transmission, and optional wheels more commonly seen on the 996 GT3. And covering just under 20,000 miles since new, it’s been moved enough to keep fluids moving, but sparingly enough to be a near time capsule.

Offered by frequent Tailored Driver flyers Gran Prix Motors in Portland, Oregon for $129,900 at time of writing, this Paint to Sample 911 Turbo S Cabriolet is a great opportunity for the investor who isn’t afraid of the 996 stigma.

  • Market Find: Paint to Sample Slate Grey 911 Turbo S

Market Find: Paint to Sample Slate Grey 911 Turbo S

Slate Grey first popped on my radar when a former employer ordered a then-new 2015 Porsche 991 Turbo S in “the Steve McQueen color.” Variants of Grey were fairly hot back in 2015 thanks to Lamborghini’s Grigio Telesto and Audi’s Nardo Grey, and McQueen’s Slate Grey 930 was being prepped for auction in Monterey, so the choice was timely.

Positioned firmly on the ‘subtle’ side of the Tailored spectrum, Slate Grey proves itself to be fairly dynamic in the right lighting. For it’s future owner, we recommend heading straight to Mulholland where the color, and the connection to McQueen himself can be brought full circle.

This PTS Slate Grey 991 Turbo S is currently offered on AutoTrader for $174,900. Check out the full listing, here.
