EU Market Find: Rare Blue Chiaro Ferrari Mondial with Red Carpets

    What: 1982 Ferrari Mondial Coupé
Color: Blu Chiaro (bluchiaro; metallic UNI; 503/C; Ferrari)
    VIN:  N/A
Mileage: 53,000 km shown, 32,932 miles
    Bid Price: € 45,900

If there’s a bargain Ferrari nowadays then maybe that’s the Mondial. It may not feature the unique Bertone design or the romance of the Dino GT4, but it’s got a similar 2+2 configuration that will allow you to drive around with some of your shorter friends.

For this car, we turn to Europe where rare and eccentric specifications are more commonly found. Though a factory color, we think Blu Chiaro over Crema leather is still a sophisticated and rare specification. Throw in red carpets and that becomes decidedly more sophisticated and rare.

This one is private party in Italy, which means you should be aware and consider costs of exportation and potential VAT taxes that could be associated. That said, the price is reasonable and an Italian pedigree to a Ferrari is pretty great, not to mention it’s likely never seen salt.

If the car is as advertised, it’s also a first owner, original paint and recently serviced example. These also make it very compelling.

BMW’s Atlantis Blue Metallic is not exactly what we’d consider understated, but what it lacks in modesty it more than makes up for in dynamism. Appearing blue in low light, and bursting to nearly teal in direct sunlight, Atlantis looks right at home on the M3 Competition- especially when paired with the equally shouty Kyalami Orange seats. Normally a fan of gold wheels, we’re not sure they really work in this application, although that’s an incredibly easy fix. If you’re not afraid of a little unsolicited conversation, we think this Tailored Driver could be a great fit.

Paint to Sample Albert Blue is an interesting color choice for a 911 GT3 RS – a color from Porsche’s rich heritage that’s somewhat subdued for such an in-your-face car as a GT3 RS. Pair it with red graphics though (not to mention carbon fiber laden Weissach Package) and the overall look becomes decidedly more bold.

One hard-to-miss element of this build is the matching blue and red tartan fabric on the seats. We’ve not seen this pattern before offered by Porsche, and the listing makes no mention of Sonderwunsch touches, fabric, tartan or plaid. That said, there are plenty of companies out there specializing in making replacement seat centers for Porsche’s carbon buckets where their modularity in construction allow for additional special touches that can take on a factory installed appearance. This may be that – handsome, but perhaps not factory and something you may want to verify if that is important to you.

This rare colored Dino 308 GT4 was owned by the same family for over three decades until it was sold to the current owner in 2020. The car has been repainted in its original color, Blu Azorro Metallizzato, the same color as used in the brochure (see photo).

A notable detail about the 308 GT4. It is the only factory Ferrari design from Bertone, a Gandini original. Though these don’t carry the premium of earlier Pininfarina Dinos, the 308 GT4 represents one of the genuine bargains in the Ferrari collector world.

Seems like tone on tone is the new black right now, and this Blue America over Blue Sterling leather Ferrari 812 GTS certainly qualifies. In addition to all the blue, this Atelier New York build also includes Blu Sterling steering wheel and upper dashboard, special internal glossy blue carbon fiber, red seat belts and Bianco 2000 stitching. There are also some elements on Rosso Ferrari leather such as center console, lower dashboard and door panels.

It is a very unique and tailored build to be sure.

“Probably the only one” says the description of this Tailored Driver, and if that is indeed the case, shame on the well-to-do of the late 80’s. Porsche’s Paint to Sample Turquoise is seldom seen, another shame which we can only chalk up to a lack of awareness. The color is vibrant and familiar yet completely underutilized- so much so that even Rennbow only has images of two factory-built examples. We’d be remiss to not also mention that exclusivity comes at a steep cost ($149,000 for a 3.2!), but as they say- go find another.

Glass half empty, the exclusivity of the 992-generation Porsche 911 Sport Classic means that very few people had the opportunity to order one. Glass half full, this rarity also contributed to a high take rate for paint to sample services. In the case of this ultra low mileage example, that paint to sample color is 356-era Oslo Blue.

Effectively the 911 Sport Classic was a 911 Turbo, though it was the only Turbo to be offered with a manual. Like the original 997-era Europe-only 911 Sport Classic, it also featured a duck tail rear spoiler and double bubble roof panel.

Interestingly, this owner skipped the Pepita houndstooth fabric reintroduced in the original Sport Classic and offered in this newer version, instead keeping things simple with black leather.

Tailored Driver strives to be of the people and by the people. So while it’d be really easy to just post blank-check Porsche GT variants all day long, we’d rather dig in the proverbial crates for stuff you can actually attain. The latest example of that is this E36 316ti, finished in Santorini Blue and currently on offer for a scant €2,100. Is it rough? Depends on your definition, but we do spot some rust near the rear driver’s side wheel arch. Does it need some ‘help’? Yeah, save for an M3 front bumper, some wheels, and suspension. Will it be slow? If you have to ask… yes, painfully. But an iconic color at a budget price doesn’t come around every day.

Arguably underappreciated in it’s day, BMW’s Laguna Seca Blue is a vivid pastel blue that has gained traction in the past decade to the point where it’s not just a frequent Tailored Driver flyer via BMW Individual, it also comes with it’s own surcharge when found on E46 M3s and later Z3 M coupes. Seen here on an M3 competition, Laguna remains quite handsome in our eyes, even if the pictures aren’t the greatest. For just under $48k, it seems like a solid deal for someone trying to get in the Tailored game, and has their heart set on an F80 M3.

With the B9 Audi range having ended production to make way for the B10-generation of A5, enthusiasts seeking a fine example of the outgoing model are left having to fend for what’s on the market. So, when we find a compelling car like the S5 Sportback and it’s painted an even more compelling color like Nogaro Blue, you have our attention.

This example also has Audi’s Prestige Package equipment level, plus the S Sport Package, Black Optic Plus Package, Navigation Package, Convenience Package and Audi Guard Protection Kit.

Red leather may be a polarizing choice to pair with Nogaro Blue, though we’d still argue it’s very attractive.
