    • Comprehensive rebuild and upgrade programme includes 405PS 5.0‑litre petrol V8 engine, eight‑speed automatic transmission, revised suspension, uprated brakes and luxurious interior
    • Classic Defender clients can create their dream Soft Top, with a choice of four hood colours, two hood styles, and near‑limitless bespoke personalisation
    • New Classic Defender V8 Soft Top prices start from £195,000 plus applicable local taxes

Coventry, UK –  Land Rover Classic has confirmed the return of an icon with the launch of the Classic Defender V8 Works Bespoke Soft Top – the most desirable classic Land Rover Defender.

Soft‑top examples of the classic Defender are highly sought‑after, and the new addition makes it possible to own a personalised example of this legendary model from the official home of classic Defenders, combining the joy of open‑topped driving with traditional Defender off‑road capability.

Exclusively available on the short‑wheelbase ‘90’ chassis, the Soft Top – the first Defender Soft Top since 2016 – follows the introduction of the new Works Bespoke service in 2024. The Soft Top provides a new way for clients to express their dream vision of a legendary Classic Defender.

Each Classic Defender V8 Soft Top is the result of hundreds of hours of work by expert Land Rover Classic engineers. Every example begins with a specially sourced donor vehicle, originally produced from 2012‑2016, which is comprehensively enhanced and reengineered. The result is a unique vehicle, produced to OEM standards with longevity, luxury and capability in mind.

A bespoke canvas hood ensures a perfect fit, and is available in four colours, with Black as standard and Sand, Dark Khaki and Navy also available. Its unique design is inspired by the hood fitted to the last Defender to roll off the production line in 2016 and features authentic tie downs and webbing. The side and rear sections can be unzipped and rolled‑up for open air driving while retaining a degree of protection from the elements, and Land Rover Classic has added extra tie‑down points to keep the canvas tightly secured at highway speeds.

The hood frame itself has been specially designed for the new model, with bracing that takes its inspiration from the coveted original NAS (North American Specification) 90. A smaller ‘Bikini Hood’ is also available, protecting the front‑seat occupants, in the same range of colours.

A selection of 49 paint finishes allows clients to create their perfect look, while the Works Bespoke match‑to‑sample colour service allows owners to create truly individual paint schemes.

Clients can personalise a vast array of exterior and interior details to bring their Soft Top vision to life, including the grille, door handles and bonnet script, while a choice of 16‑inch Wolf wheels or 18‑inch Sawtooth alloys is available – the former finished in either Black or Limestone. Inside, there are five monotone or eight duo‑tone leather options to choose from, with colours such as Caraway, Liberty Blue, and Garnet, plus any number of other bespoke finishes. Unusual options and accessories include an onboard wine cooler and a custom surfboard rack, allowing Land Rover Classic to create one‑off examples to suit any lifestyle.

All Classic Defender V8 Soft Top vehicles are powered by a Land Rover 5.0‑litre petrol V8 engine, with 405hp and 515Nm of torque. This is paired with an eight‑speed ZF automatic transmission, ensuring effortless performance and precise responses.

The V8 power is accompanied by uprated suspension and brakes. The suspension set‑up is specifically tailored to the unique characteristics of the 90 Soft Top and combines traditional Defender capability with superior comfort in all environments. Its revised coil spring rates, Eibach anti‑roll bars, and Bilstein dampers have undergone comprehensive testing and development to ensure they meet OEM standards. The brakes are uprated to four‑piston Alcon units with front discs measuring 335mm in diameter, and 300mm at the rear, for confidence‑inspiring stopping power.

Dedicated personalised support is provided by the specialist teams at Land Rover Classic in Coventry, UK, and Essen, Germany. Prices for the Classic Defender V8 Soft Top start from £195,000 plus applicable local taxes and every example comes with a one‑year, unlimited mileage warranty.

    V8 DEFENDER HISTORY

V8 powertrains in the Land Rover Defender and its production predecessors started with the Series III Stage 1 V8 of 1979. The carburetted 3.5‑litre Rover V8 produced 90bhp.

The Land Rover 110 from 1983, and 90 from 1984, used the same 3.5‑litre Rover V8 engine as the Series III Stage 1 V8, but in 113bhp form, uprated to 135bhp from 1987.

For North American Specification (NAS), Defender 90s and 110s only, from 1992, a 182bhp fuel‑injected 3.9‑litre version of the Rover V8 was fitted, along with a four‑speed automatic transmission.

In 1998, the fuel‑injected 190bhp 4.0‑litre V8 from the second‑generation Range Rover was fitted to a limited run of 50th Anniversary Defender 90s, with a four‑speed automatic transmission.

5.0‑litre naturally aspirated 2018 Defender Works V8 became the first official V8‑powered Land Rover Defender to be introduced since 1998.

Other editions of the Land Rover Classic Defender V8 include the Islay, Trophy and Trophy II variants.

  • Defender Widebody by Chelsea Truck Company

Defender Widebody by Chelsea Truck Company

    [source: Chelsea Truck Company]

Since 2012, the Chelsea Truck Company has been rewriting the rulebook for how a Defender should look, feel, and command attention. The original Wide Track Defender wasn’t just a body kit, it was a statement. A formidable, more aggressive reinterpretation of Britain’s most popular 4×4, built with the kind of detail and swagger you won’t find in a traditional dealership.

Fast forward to 2025, and the team at Kahn Design, the design house behind the Chelsea Truck Co., is once again elevating the game. Enter the Widebody: a carefully evolved design built for the modern L663-generation Defender, marrying heritage cues with contemporary craftsmanship.

Where others might rest on their laurels, Kahn Design refines. This latest iteration isn’t just a visual update; it’s a complete rethink of form and function. First seen on last year’s Defender X Prototype, the new Wide Track package retains the muscular silhouette customers have come to love, but adds sharper lines, cleaner integration, and a more purposeful stance.

The big news? The entire kit is now constructed from high-grade automotive ABS, a material prized in the industry for its lightweight strength and durability. This change improves fit and finish and allows for a more accessible price point without compromising on the premium feel clients expect from Chelsea Truck Co.

One of the previous generation’s limitations is also addressed: compatibility with our bumper vents. The previous front wings extended further onto the front bumper, and in response to customer demand, we have remodelled the arches to allow full front-end styling compatibility, an essential finishing touch for those building the ultimate urban/off-road Defender.

Designed under the watchful eye of Afzal Kahn, the brand’s founder and Chief Designer, each component is shaped with a designer’s eye and an engineer’s precision. The wide-track arches aren’t just bigger — they’re better, sculpted to complement the Defender’s bold proportions while allowing it to retain all of its off-road credentials. This is no show pony.

The Wide Body Defender 2.0 is more than a styling kit, it’s a continuation of a design legacy. It speaks to a driver who demands presence without shouting, who values materiality and craftsmanship as much as capability.

The Wide Body kit is available now for 90 and 110 and is also part of our Series II Conversions soon to be available through our dealer network.

Alternatively, a range of converted vehicles is available now via KAHN Automobiles.

Built for adventure and elegance alike, the lower body features 3D-textured protective paint, combining resilience with a rugged yet refined finish.

    A Cabin Crafted for Distinction
Inside, Concept 001 elevates Defender luxury to new heights. The hand-finished black leather interior, adorned with Britannia blue piping and extended upholstery accents, introduces an unprecedented level of bespoke sophistication.

An exclusive Kahn Design Concept Identity Badge underscores its artistry, alongside meticulously curated details like colour-matched side vents with CTC Plaques, K A H N bonnet lettering, and the signature Chelsea Truck Co. radar emblem. Location: Milford, CT
    Listing: BringATrailer.com

Imported in 2020, this left hand drive original Defender 90 is a desirable specification though not entirely original. It’s been modified to look like early HUE 166 model including Grasmere Green paint, beige seats, white roof, color matched steel wheels and “HUE 166” badging.

Also desirable, it’s go the more powerful 2.5-liter turbodiesel inline four cylinder with give-speed manual transmission and dual-range transfer case. Other amenities include dual inward facing rear seats, locking center differential, hard top, 16-inch steel wheels, “Puma” hood, front disc brakes and cabin heater.

The listing has a lot of close-up detail shots that we didn’t include here but are worth checking out if you are thinking about bidding. Most Land Rovers this age are not pristine, and this one shows some wear and overspray. Even still, it’s still quite charming in a very classic Land Rover specification and so we’re including it here.

  • Defender Octa to Provide Foundations for Dakar & FIA World Rally-Raid Championship Entry

Defender Octa to Provide Foundations for Dakar & FIA World Rally-Raid Championship Entry

    • Defender will enter Dakar and the FIA World Rally‑Raid Championship (W2RC) from 2026 with a new competition‑spec vehicle derived from Defender OCTA
    • Defender will compete in the ‘Stock’ category for production‑based vehicles which from 2026 will conform to new and heavily revised regulations
    • Competition vehicles will share Defender OCTA’s tough underpinnings and 4.4‑litre twin turbo V8 powertrain
    • Every competition vehicle will retain the same tough D7x body architecture, transmission and driveline layout as Defender OCTA – testament to its extreme durability and strength

    [source: Land Rover]

Defender OCTA – the performance hero of the unstoppable Defender family – will form the basis of Defender’s Dakar and FIA World Rally Raid Championship competition challenger from 2026, showcasing its extreme performance credentials in the world’s toughest off‑road events.

Unstoppable all‑terrain capability and strength are at the core of every Defender and these attributes are essential for any rally‑raid competition vehicle. Selecting Defender OCTA – the fastest and most capable Defender ever made – as the basis for the British adventure brand’s rally‑raid programme was a natural choice.

Defender will run a two‑vehicle entry of competition‑spec Defenders across the full five rounds of the FIA World Rally‑Raid Championship (W2RC) under the ‘Stock’ category for production‑based vehicles, and a three‑vehicle entry in the championship’s halo event, the Dakar Rally, from 2026.

New regulations aimed at making the ‘Stock’ category significantly more competitive will be implemented by 2026, as the FIA and Dakar organisers respond to the growing popularity of high‑performance 4x4s and SUVs. It’s the increased performance these new regulations permit that make the Stock category perfect to authentically demonstrate Defender’s extreme durability and capability.

Taking on the most demanding rally‑raid event in the world represents the ultimate test of our most extreme Defender to date. We know that Dakar will be an immense challenge, but Defender OCTA combines huge performance with characteristic Defender capability and durability – the perfect foundations for what I’m confident will be a highly competitive rally‑raid vehicle. – Mark Cameron, Defender Managing Director

Defender competing in Dakar will be an incredibly exciting challenge. We had a vision for the future of production‑based vehicles in rally‑raid so it has been incredibly positive to align with the ASO, FIA and other manufacturers and work collaboratively to create the new regulations for the ‘Stock’ category. We now have the right platform to authentically demonstrate Defender’s capability in the biggest challenge in off‑road motorsport. Ahead of us is a year of detailed preparation, testing and learning to be ready for Dakar 2026. The team are already well under way and we are very much looking forward to competing in both Dakar and W2RC – the world’s toughest off‑road events. – James Barclay, JLR Motorsport Managing Director

At the core of Defender OCTA – and retained for the competition vehicles – is its robust D7x (for extreme) body architecture. Based on the lightweight aluminium monocoque construction that forms the basis of every Defender, it is three times stronger than traditional ‘body‑on‑frame’ designs and provides impressive torsional rigidity.

This inherent robustness, coupled with Defender OCTA’s bespoke geometry and kinematic design, made it the obvious choice to underpin Defender’s Dakar programme. The specially prepared competition vehicles will share Defender OCTA’s body architecture, transmission and driveline layout – as per the Dakar and W2RC’s regulations – to showcase its unstoppable capability and durability. Power will be provided by Defender OCTA’s 4.4‑litre twin turbo V8 engine.

An exhaustive Defender competition test and development programme is already well under way. It will culminate in test events and a full team launch later this year ahead of Dakar and the FIA World Rally Raid Championship in 2026.

Established in 2001 in Oxfordshire, UK, adjacent to the heritage site of the classic Defender, Kingsley has previously worked on Defenders as part of individual and special projects for customers. With the introduction of this definitive Defender series, Kingsley is now offering its first series of overhauled Defenders as a cohesive collection. This new line embodies the essence of Kingsley’s craftsmanship, combined with the benefits of extensive research and development to create a unified product offering for customers worldwide.

John Sawbridge, Managing Director of Kingsley Re-Engineered said: “Reimagining the Defender is not just about preserving its legacy, but about enhancing it for the modern driver. We take great pride in our meticulous approach to restoration and customisation, ensuring that each vehicle not only honours the past but also embraces the future with innovations and comfort – all while staying true and representative of Kingsley for a new age. Our goal is to deliver a Defender that resonates with the same spirit of adventure and robustness, but with the sophistication and driving dynamics that today’s discerning customers expect.”

An icon for a new era
The new Defender line is not just a restoration; it is a re-imagining of the iconic Land Rover model. Each vehicle is crafted with an estimated 1,500 hours of meticulous attention to detail, all done from Kingsley’s UK headquarters. This comprehensive process includes significant upgrades to performance, comfort, and durability, making the Defender a true modern classic. While as standard the Kingsley team uses an overhauled, original powertrain, the D90 shown at Salon Privé today features the all-new Kingsley high torque 4.2-litre V8 engine. In this configuration, the top speed exceeds 100 mph and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 9.5 seconds. Overall, this powertrain delivers 220 bhp and 360 Nm of torque at 3,250 rpm. Kingsley will also offer an optional four to eight-speed automatic gearbox conversion, alongside the other optional Chevrolet LS3/LT1 V8 engines.

Designed to be both a sanctuary and a command centre, the interior of a Kingsley Defender is crafted with care to offer unparalleled comfort, advanced technology, and bespoke luxury, all while staying true to the iconic Defender spirit. Whether opting for a complete refurbishment of the original trim or a full reimagining with high-quality Nappa leather and Alcantara accents, Kingsley ensures that the interior of the Defender reflects both the rugged heritage of the vehicle and the refined tastes of its owner.

The D90 demonstrator, available for test drives in the UK and showcased at Salon Privé at Blenheim Palace this year [2024], features exclusive sandstone leather with Spinneybeck leather weave seat centres, offering both comfort and style – though owners have the freedom to choose any material and colour combination they prefer. The Kingsley upgraded instrument cluster and smaller diameter steering wheel enhance the driving experience, while modern conveniences, such as wireless Apple CarPlay, are seamlessly integrated.

Each Kingsley Defender will feature bespoke exterior colour combinations, with a core palette of Heritage hues available. Unlike many of its peers, Kingsley completes all paintwork on-site, meaning that production, paint and build are never more than a few hundred yards away from each other. For those seeking a more personalised touch, bespoke colours and finishes are available on request, including options for custom PPF and ceramic coating, ensuring a truly unique and durable finish.

Suspension and braking systems have also been significantly upgraded. The Defender comes equipped with electronically controlled active damping suspension at standard ride height and Stage 1 upgraded brakes with larger front callipers, ensuring optimal handling and stopping power. With all-terrain, TA Goodrich tyres on 18-inch lightweight wheels in anthracite and an upgraded engine cooling system, featuring a full alloy radiator and electric cooling fans, the Defender ensures reliable performance – both inside and out – under all conditions.

John Sawbridge, Managing Director of Kingsley Re-Engineered continued, saying: “Every Kingsley build goes through a meticulous restoration process – we leave no stone unturned. This includes everything from removing corrosion from the donor chassis to ensure long-term durability and protection for future custodians, to full internal wax protection of the chassis and panels, alongside our proprietary future-proofing techniques. We don’t just build cars for today – we build them for tomorrow and generations to come.”

    Bespoke customer optimisation
Customisation options are extensive, allowing customers to tailor their Defender to their specific preferences in both D90 and D110 configurations. Roof choices include hard top, panoramic glass, open top with bikini cover, and full canvas covering. Other enhancements include heated seats, tyre pressure monitoring systems, and various audio solutions, ensuring each build is uniquely tailored. Additional options such as big brake kits, and other petrol powered V8 engine choices provide further personalisation.

Since its inception, Kingsley has restored, rebuilt, and maintained over 500 classic Range Rovers and iconic Land Rovers, establishing itself as a leader and specialist in the field. Now, under new ownership and management, Kingsley is poised to usher in a new era of classic automotive excellence. With significant investment in product lines, customer experience, and bespoke specifications, the company is set to elevate these iconic vehicles further. This comprehensive investment programme is already underway, with the new line of Defenders powering this new chapter in Kingsley’s second decade of operations

Building on this momentum, Kingsley’s new group ownership are dedicated to merging the fundamental attributes of bespoke builds with a world-class standard, ensuring unmatched, customisation and functionality. The newly appointed custodians, deeply passionate about classic Range Rovers and the iconic Land Rover marque, are committed to not only elevating Kingsley’s legacy and craftsmanship but also to extending its brand and focusing on continued innovation. This forward-thinking approach ensures limitless possibilities for bespoke personalisation, offering a sense of freedom for experienced clients with a global outlook.

Debuting the new Defender series at this year’s prestigious Salon Privé Blenheim Palace Concours 2024, the D90 model will be on display from today to 31 August 2024. This exclusive event, renowned for showcasing the finest in automotive luxury, provides the perfect platform to unveil Kingsley’s reimagined Defenders to a discerning audience. Guests will have the opportunity to experience firsthand the craftsmanship, engineering and customisation that define Kingsley’s approach to restoring and re-engineering this British icon.

Introducing a new hero for the original British adventure brand Defender: New Defender OCTA. The toughest, most capable and most luxurious model in the unstoppable 4×4 family, taking the capability of Defender 110 to an unparalleled level.

Powered by a 4.4‑litre Twin Turbo mild‑hybrid V8 engine, the OCTA model is the most extreme and most powerful Defender ever, with 635PS and up to 750Nm1 of  torque enabling 0‑60mph in 3.8 seconds (0‑100km/h in 4.0 seconds). Heavily revised chassis components with innovative technologies, including 6D Dynamics suspension, ensure its dynamic capabilities are taken to new heights.

The exterior is bolder and tougher than ever, with a distinct character. The ride height is raised, its stance widened, and wheel arches extended for incredible presence. Redesigned bumpers give improved approach and departure angles, while tough underbody protection gives drivers the confidence to explore further over rough terrain. And, it will wade deeper than any production Defender before it too – through up to one metre of water.

New Defender OCTA’s name is derived from the toughest and most desirable mineral on earth – a diamond – and the octahedral shape that gives their distinctive appearance and durability. This shape also inspired the new signature graphic, which denotes it as the flagship Defender – strong and resilient, yet striking, rare and desirable.

Every Defender OCTA wears a new encircled diamond graphic, including a gloss black diamond within a machined and sandblasted titanium disc on each Signature Graphic panel.

The tough luxury of Defender OCTA is epitomised by Defender OCTA Edition One, which is available in the first year of production. It features a curated specification, finished in an exclusive new Faroe Green paint colour with a Khaki and Ebony UltrafabricsTM PU  and seam‑less Knit interior, new Chopped Carbon Fibre detailing, and 20‑inch forged alloy wheels with a choice of all‑terrain or optional specially developed Advanced All‑Terrain Tyres.2

    Unparalleled Performance

New Defender OCTA brings unheard of performance to Defender. Powered by a 635PS 4.4‑litre Twin Turbo mild‑hybrid V8 engine mated to an eight‑speed automatic transmission with high and low range gears, it is the most powerful and most extreme Defender ever. New Defender OCTA will reach up to 155mph when fitted with 22‑inch lightweight alloy wheels and all‑season tyres.

    Incredible Capability and Durability

New Defender OCTA’s dynamic capabilities go beyond what any Defender has achieved before, with the introduction of hydraulically‑interlinked 6D Dynamics suspension technology for the first time on a Defender, alongside extensive hardware and geometry changes. Uniquely, it’s designed to be as fun to drive on‑road as off‑road, with no compromises.

Defender OCTA sits 28mm higher and has a stance widened by 68mm, for superior ground clearance and stability. To ensure unparalleled confidence and control on any terrain, with both maximum wheel articulation off‑road and reduced roll on‑road, revised suspension components include longer and tougher wishbones, and unique active dampers with separate accumulators. It also features uprated 400mm front brake discs with Brembo calipers and the fastest steering ratio of any Defender to date, for immediate, precise, responses.

A bespoke testing and development programme with more than 13,960 additional tests, including high‑speed off‑road durability, as well as high‑speed on‑road durability, had to be created for Defender OCTA, as the team entered realms of capability and robustness that have never been explored before.

An advanced network of hydraulically‑interlinked continuously variable semi‑active dampers virtually eliminates pitch and body roll on‑road, the 6D Dynamics system also contributing to unprecedented comfort and refinement for Defender. On rough terrain, 6D Dynamics enables greater wheel articulation and will tackle even more extreme obstacles, meaning clients can take their adventures even further and in superior comfort.

The full capabilities of New Defender OCTA – which can automatically detect which surface it is being driven on and optimise its dynamic settings accordingly – are unlocked via its enhanced drive modes. In addition to the default Comfort Mode, Dynamic Mode provides the ultimate performance‑focused on‑road experience, tuning the vehicle’s steering, throttle and suspension settings with one press of the transparent signature logo button on the steering wheel.

A long press of the same button accesses OCTA Mode, the first ever dedicated Defender off‑road driving mode with a performance focus. This has been specially developed to ensure ultimate control and driver confidence. OCTA Mode also enables an Off‑Road Launch mode for optimum acceleration on loose surfaces. And, when combined with the lowest traction control settings (TracDSC or DSC off) it also engages a unique Off‑Road ABS calibration for optimum braking performance on loose surfaces too.

For more technical off‑road manoeuvres, Defender’s suite of familiar Terrain Response modes remain at the driver’s fingertips, with specific calibrations for Sand, Mud and Ruts, Grass Gravel Snow, and Rock Crawl – assisted by off‑road driver aids such as ClearSight Ground View3, which effectively makes the bonnet transparent for improved visibility and reassurance off the beaten track.

    Confident Exterior

Defender’s imposing presence and all‑terrain focus is given a bold new attitude for Defender OCTA. It features 33‑inch diameter tyres, the largest ever fitted to a production Defender, including a Goodyear Advanced All‑Terrain Tyre1 developed specifically for the OCTA model. This has required extended wheel arches, which complement off‑road‑optimised front bodywork with unique grille designs allowing greater under‑bonnet airflow, a new rear bumper incorporating a four‑exit active exhaust system, tough underbody protection including an aluminium alloy front under shield with graphite finish and exposed Phosphor Bronze‑finished front and rear recovery points.

Defender OCTA’s colour palette includes two exclusive new premium metallic finishes: Petra Copper and Faroe Green, alongside Carpathian Grey and Charente Grey, while all Defender OCTA models feature a contrast roof and tailgate in gloss Narvik Black. Clients can further personalise their vehicle with optional Matte Protective Film for added body protection in harsh environments, also adding a sophisticated appearance that showcases its distinctive silhouette and sophisticated surfacing.

Faroe Green is exclusively available on Defender OCTA Edition One, as is Chopped Carbon Fibre detailing. This highly distinctive finish, which includes recycled raw materials, features on the Defender bonnet script, fender vent surrounds and bonnet vent surrounds, plus the front seatbacks and centre console trim inside.

    Engaging, Immersive Interior

Inside, curated selections set New Defender OCTA apart. Two highly durable UltrafabricsTM PU options – 30 per cent lighter than traditional leather – are available. This seat finish is standard on Defender OCTA Edition One, in duo‑tone Khaki and Ebony, with a knit textile and reductive, seamless finish.

For Defender OCTA, the standard interior is a new Burnt Sienna semi‑aniline leather, with KvadratTM textile trim in Ebony. Alternatively, any Defender OCTA can be specified with UltrafabricsTM PU in Light Cloud and Lunar, or semi‑aniline leather in Ebony.

The front row of Defender OCTA features all‑new Performance Seats with more supportive bolsters and integrated headrests. Defender’s close association with music is brought to the fore with immersive Body and Soul Seat audio technology – available for the first time in Defender.

The Body and Soul Seat has been developed in collaboration with music industry experts SUBPAC and Coventry University, allowing the driver and front passenger to feel, as well as hear, the music. Six wellness programmes are also available to help relax occupants or help improve cognitive responses on the move, depending on their preference.
