  • 1991 “Oppenheimer Commission” Singer DLS Goes Sealed Bid with RM Sotheby’s

1991 “Oppenheimer Commission” Singer DLS Goes Sealed Bid with RM Sotheby’s

What: 1991 Porsche 911 DLS “Oppenheimer Commission” by Singer
Color: Brilliant Blue Metallic (sonicblue; metallic Uni; 896; Mercedes-Benz)
    VIN: WP0ZZZ96ZMS406828
Mileage: 120 km, 75 miles from completion by Singer in 2023
    Price: Sealed Bid

    Window Sticker: N/A
    Location: Chobham, England

Another Singer DLS has hit the market, this time in a sealed bid sale with RM Sotheby’s. Built as a left hand drive yet UK registered. So, while it’s based in the UK, its age and configuration make it fairly easy to certify and register in other markets like the U.S.A.

“The Oppenheimer Commission” was named for the Oppenheimer Blue diamond and not for the nuclear physicist. Said diamond is a 14.62-carat rock that is the largest fancy vivid blue diamond classified by the Geological Institute of America ever sold at auction.

While light weighting and performance was the main mission of the DLS, opulence befitting a gargantuan blue diamond also sort of fits cars costing more than seven figures to build. And, opulent Oppenheimer is, utilizing Mercedes-Benz Brilliant Blue Metallic contrasted with a generous amount of clear carbon fiber coated with navy tint gloss lacquer around the exterior and also throughout the cabin. This is particularly elegant in the blue lettering and striping on the car, subtly contrasting in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it sort of way with the Brilliant Blue paint.

Oppenheimer also sports several one-off features Singer hadn’t tried before constructing it. For instance, the underbody of the car was fitted with underbody protection film. The smoked DLS-specification taillights aren’t one-ff, but they are seldomly seen and reportedly an $18,000 option.

Inside, the primary leather color is Cream, contrasted with Navy Blue Alcantara that is color-matched to the blue carbon fiber throughout. The car’s carbon bucket seats also get offset navy blue stripes in leather, while the shift knob is maple.

Singer only built 70 examples of the DLS. Now combine this one owner car’s odometer showing not much more than delivery miles and the opportunity should be obvious. Granted, that the price will be high should also be obvious. Even still, if you want to skip the line then Oppenheimer may be worth watching.

Market Find: Singer Dynamics and Lightweighting Study at Graham Rahal Performance

What: 1990 Porsche 911 Singer DLS
Color: Dark Olive (unknown color code)
    VIN: WP0ZZZ96ZLS408205
Mileage: 1,415 miles (believed since restoration/conversion)
    Price: $3,149,995
    CarFax: N/A
    Window Sticker: N/A
Location: Graham Rahal Performance, Zionsville, IN
    Dealer Listing: Link

    Why We Love It:

The DLS formula for Singer reimaginings is a remarkable thing. Launched in 2018, it created perhaps the ultimate specification for a classic 911, complete with all-carbon bodywork and 500 horsepower 4.0-liter flat six developed by Williams Advanced Engineering. The car was both incredibly expensive and very sought-after, making for years of waiting to get one or prices in the millions if you can find one (see above).

Should you wish to skip the line, Graham Rahal can help assist with this Dark Oliver over Antique Tan example. The black-painted Fuchs-like wheels give it an extra unique appearance even amongst other DLS where exposed silver star protrusions are the typical finish applied. That’s all a very tasteful mix, though there’s a premium attached. Check out the link above for more information, photos and contact details.

When covering these creations from Singer, we usually like to keep track of the Commission or title name given to the car. We’re not seeing one on this car, nor in the listing so if you happen to know then drop us a line or share it in the comments section below.

Thanks to Kevin Baker for the tip.

Market Find: Fluid Silver on Green Singer DLS in Private Sale by Broad Arrow

What: 1991 Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer DLS “Dynamics and Lightweight Study”
    Color: Fluid Silver
    VIN: WP0ZZZ96ZMS400118
    Mileage: 182

    Window Sticker: N/A
    Location: USA
    Dealer listing: Link

    Why we love it:

Say you’ve been wanting a Singer, have got the cash but not the time to wait your turn in the ever-lengthening cue. If that describes your particular plight, then you may want to head on over to Broad Arrow and hit up their Private Sales inventory where the “Mame Commission” has popped up for sale.

In a day of wild colored tailored specs being… well, not common, but also not rare, choosing a subtle neutral silver and then packing some unexpected color on the inside is a beautiful display of if-you-know-you-know taste that embraces the understated. That’s the mix on “Mame”, with an exterior of Fluid Silver (a $42,550 option) and an interior of Olive Green Suede. It’s just so good.

Singer only ever built 75 examples of the DLS and availability is typically zero. That the “Mame Commission” with just 182 miles on it is available, much less in a fantastic specification, should definitely be noted. To quote Ferris Bueller, “It’s so choice. If you have the means (we)’d highly suggest it.”

Even better, they also shared the paint names for the three finishes. These include the DLS Turbo in Turbo Racing White with Fluro Red accents, the Classic Turbo in Turbo Racing White and Seafoam and the DLS in Parallax White and Norfolk Yellow.

Californian Luxury Brand Returns to The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering Showing Latest Work from both US and UK.

Los Angeles, CA — Singer will show a client-specification Porsche 911, representing the results of its Dynamics and Lightweighting Study (DLS), for the first time in North America, at The Quail, during Monterey Car Week on Friday, August 13, 2021

DLS represents Singer’s exploration of the ultra-high-performance potential of the air-cooled Porsche 911, on behalf of their clients. All 75 restorations are sold. Operations for the Dynamics and Lightweighting Study are based in the UK.

Singer will also present the latest results of its restoration services from California, referred to as the Hollywood commission, in Bahama Yellow over Forest Green. This car is inspired by the 1969 911E, restored by Singer Founder, Rob Dickinson, in 2003. After being used as a daily driver, the reaction to Rob’s car, also in Bahama Yellow, led to the concept of offering restoration services to air-cooled 911 owners. As such the 1969 car epitomizes the genesis of Singer.

Together these two cars represent both Singer’s origins and its latest work on behalf of discerning owners and drivers.

Combining iconic design with cutting-edge engineering and material science, the two cars embody the ongoing Singer philosophy – A Relentless Pursuit of Excellence.

Singer’s Founder and Executive Chairman, Rob Dickinson notes:
“The restoration of my 1969 car was an intensely personal project. I drove the hell out of the car everyday around the Hollywood Hills and kept getting stopped to ask if I’d sell it. My answer was always no. But the experience was the seed that led to the founding of Singer as a way to enable other owners to pursue their personal vision for the ultimate air-cooled 911.

We’ve followed that path ever since, and ultimately it led us to undertake the Dynamics and Lightweighting Study. Seeing the first client-specification DLS car, from our operations in the UK, back here in California is a significant milestone for us. Side-by-side with the latest completed restoration from our California facility is a very proud moment and the ultimate testament to the talents of our amazing teams on both sides of the Atlantic and our incredible clients.”

About the Dynamics & Lightweighting Study
The Dynamics & Lightweighting Study originated with a request from Singer’s clients to further evolve restoration services for owners of the air-cooled 911. No more than 75 cars will be restored in the UK, each as a bespoke commission for its owner. The starting point is a Type 964 Porsche 911.

Californian Luxury Brand Continues Global Growth in 2021 with First Client DLS Car, Record Demand and New Markets

Oxfordshire, UK — Singer expands its global presence with the recent addition of facilities at renowned UK automotive destination, Bicester Heritage. The country is home to operations for the Dynamics and Lightweighting Study (DLS), Singer’s exploration of the ultra-high-performance potential of the air-cooled Porsche 911, on behalf of their clients. All 75 cars will be restored in the UK.

Singer also makes a welcome return to the highly anticipated Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 8-11, 2021 in Chichester, West Sussex). Two completed DLS restorations will be presented and driven at the event, including the first client commission. This key milestone underlines Singer’s ability to deliver on its Relentless Pursuit of Excellence.

According to Singer’s British Founder and Executive Chairman, Rob Dickinson, the Southern California-based luxury brand, known for combining iconic design with modern engineering, has long seen the UK as a second home. “Thanks to the relationships we’ve built with the foremost technical partners, including Williams Advanced Engineering, Multimatic, Michelin and Bosch, we’ve been able to bring our clients’ personal vision for their incredible machines to reality. There’s no better place to show the results of the Dynamics and Lightweighting Study than Goodwood, in our sixth year at this spectacular event.”

With restorations completed for owners in more than 30 countries over the last decade, Singer has become renowned within the luxury world for its highly personalized services, superlative attention to detail and deep connection with California. The Singer philosophy has grown beyond the automotive world, with the launch of the Singer Reimaginedhigh-watchmaking division in 2017.

The Geneva-based, award-winning horological brand was selected for watchmaking’s highest honors with the GPHG (Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève) ‘Chronograph Award’ in its launch year. Singer Reimagined recently introduced its latest work, the Flytrack, along with the announcement that the ‘Launch’ and ‘Geneva’ editions of its iconic Track 1 chronograph are fully sold.

Despite the global pandemic Singer saw a 50% increase in demand for its luxury automotive services, year on year, through to the end of 2020. Since Q4 2020, Singer’s Global Partner Network has expanded from its original services in USA, Puerto Rico, Canada, UK and Hong Kong to further support owners worldwide with representation in Germany, Taiwan, Japan, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand.  Plans are in place for further growth through year-end and beyond.

Singer’s CEO, Mazen Fawaz, reflected on the significance of Singer’s role at Goodwood, noting the Festival of Speed has been the launching ground for Singer’s latest work since 2015.  “We’ve had so many milestones at Goodwood – from launching our first Targa restoration on the Cartier Lawn, to sharing our 10th anniversary with our clients driving their own cars on the famous Hillclimb– it’s only fitting that our newest chapter, the first two client-specification examples of the Dynamics and Lightweighting Study, are providing another first at Goodwood.”

Singer’s Founder Rob Dickinson Enthralled by First Drive of Client-Spec Restoration Representing Results of Dynamics and Lightweighting Study – 1st UK Shakedown Brings Overwhelming Joy

    [source: Singer Vehicle Design]

UK – March 31, 2021 – Last Wednesday, Singer’s Founder and Executive Chairman, Rob Dickinson, experienced pure joy at the company’s new UK HQ at Bicester Heritage, when he drove the first client-specification example of the results of the Dynamics & Lightweighting Study (DLS) for the car’s shakedown.

The study represents Singer’s exploration of the ultra-high-performance potential of the air-cooled Porsche 911, on behalf of its clients. With a formation of some of the most important automotive performance brands, Singer has pursued light weight, high performance, and extraordinary execution to delight owners and enthusiasts. Restorations representing the results of the Dynamics and Lightweighting Study are moving through final assembly and anticipated to be in their owners’ hands in the coming months.

“What a fantastic* experience! The towering team of talented heroes we managed to assemble for the Dynamics and Lightweighting Study has produced an astonishing result – the car is simple extraordinary.” noted Dickinson.

He added, “I am so happy for our commissioning clients – we will be repaying their immense patience and trust with a truly remarkable machine.”

Dickinson was joined at Bicester by Singer’s Head of UK Operations, Dave Embling; Head of Dynamic Development, Marino Franchitti; Chief Engineer Paul Eastman; Head of Engine Development John Magee; Head of Electrical System, Adam Lister.

Mazen Fawaz, CEO of Singer Group, Inc. explains – “The last year has been unlike any other and has presented incredible challenges for a growing automotive company employing teams on both sides of the Atlantic. We’ve risen to every one of them.

We’ve seen a record 12 months for new orders for our restoration services, despite the absence of the usual events calendar. We reopened our operations in both California and the UK after the enforced shut-downs of COVID-19 and grew our team size from 120 to 150 across the US and UK. We’ve kept cars moving through the restoration process, despite the shutdown of the global supply chain. We’ve adapted our working practices to the pandemic world and cars will continue to be completed and presented to their owners.

To achieve all this and maintain our extreme quality standards has taken an incredible team effort. To see the cars being completed, hear them running and feel how special they are to drive means everything to us. I would like to say thank you to every one of our clients. They have supported and encouraged us every step of the way.”

(*fantastic was not the exact word Rob used but it does share appropriate letters.)
