From our perspective, Paint to Sample examples of cars like this 997.2-era Porsche 911 are some of the hardest to find. Paint to Sample services being chosen for a car wasn’t nearly as common in this era, making them so much rarer and hard to find than modern Porsche models.

This particular car is a phenomenal spec. Painted the 964-era Carrera Cup-originating Maritime Blue is already a great choice, though quite obscure on a Carrera 4S. Inside, the spec continues with additional leather, red stitching and more.

We’re always fans of the selection at Ryan Friedman Motorcars in Glen Cove, NY and car such as this one are exemplary of why we’re so quick to express our fandom.

Special editions are always a bit of a grey area in the Tailored Driver world because to be honest, they’re usually just a ploy to move a few units with very specific options. This Frozen Black Edition M3 is the exception to the rule- just 20 were made for the US and if you wanted one, you had to call a hotline at a specific time to get it. Seriously. But while the method of initial procurement is now antiquated to the point of silliness, the M3 still looks incredibly modern. A high revving V8 is paired with the quick shifting DCT, and iDrive is present, meaning a CarPlay retrofit is an easy and worthwhile endeavor. Perhaps the best bit is the price. At $34k, it’s well within the ballpark of what a run-of-the-mill M3 would fetch in today’s market.

As frequent visitors have learned- we’re massive fans of the 997-generation 911. The right size, modern (enough) tech, and still hints of that analog driving experience, the 997 also had the benefit of being the real start of Porsche’s endless variant strategy and proliferation of Paint to Sample. This particular 997 in Paint to Sample Speed Yellow has another big thing going for it, being a Speedster. Consider it an unexpected must-have for the 911 collector who already has the numerous ‘traditional’ GT models, awaiting its next steward.

    Why we love it:

The 997.2 Turbo S is, in most cases, a Porsche model which wears the ‘good value’ for money badge proudly. Enthusiasts have overlooked the shocking performance due to a lack of engagement from the PDK-only transmission, and as such the 997 Turbo S can often be had for a song- even more so should it’s roof be made of fabric rather than metal. This Tailored Driver is not one of those ‘value’ examples, but when it comes to spec, this is incredibly enticing. Paint to Sample Mexico Blue was a bold choice in 2011, but it works, especially when juxtaposed with Yellow brake calipers and silver center lock wheels. All of this is to say there’s plenty of ‘value’ in this blue chip Turbo S even if the price is a bit high compared to others in market. We think when appreciation for this variant hits, it’ll hit incredibly hard.

  • Market Find: Audi exclusive Teak Brown S5 Cabriolet on Bring a Trailer

Market Find: Audi exclusive Teak Brown S5 Cabriolet on Bring a Trailer

From the affordable tailored segment of the market comes this 2011 Audi S5 Cabriolet ( WAUVGAFHXBN001647 listed by 1600veloce on Bring a Trailer. Not only is its brown on brown color combination totally fitting in the midst of autumn, its unique spec on a 67,000 mile 2011 S5 with replaced 7-speed DSG transmission hints that it will result in an approachable number for someone seeking a unique specification on a budget.

Here’s what we know about the specification of the car without having seen the Monroney sticker or build list. The paint color is listed as Audi exclusive Teak Brown Metallic. In 2011, Teak Brown was offered on the A5 and other models, though it wasn’t offered on the S5. This would have made it an Audi exclusive paint, more affordable than a completely custom color because it was in production elsewhere in the lineup.

A puzzle is the interior specification. The BaT listing states that it’s Tuscan Brown Nappa Leather. Using the European model literature as a reference, we’re not seeing a Tuscan Brown option, though do see Magma Red and Mustang Brown. Typically, a car with a deviating Audi exclusive interior would have an aluminum “Audi exclusive” badge on the door panel. This car does not have that, so we’re guessing this amber brown interior isn’t an Audi exclusive specification.

We don’t have a MY2011 U.S. order guide so aren’t able to confirm the specification of the interior, but we’re guessing it was standard and rare color at the time. Whatever, it’s a great specification on a car with low mileage for its age and some wear and tear that should make it an enjoyable and affordable driver.
