If you’ve been an Audi fan for a while, chances are that when the Four Rings replaced the iconic Nogaro Blue with Sprint Blue for the B7 generation of S4 and RS 4 you questioned the decision. And when the B8 launched with Sprint as well, it became apparent that Audi wasn’t going back to the Nogaro well any longer, but at the time Audi exclusive was simply not widely known as a path to right that wrong. As such, we’re led to believe that the original Tailor of this S4 was a tried and true brand evangelist who put their money where their mouth was. By pairing Nogaro with a 6 speed transmission, finished with alcantara-centered black leather seats and brushed aluminum interior trim, this S4 harkens back to the prior generations in many ways. The only remaining question is- will others take note of just how special this S4 is, or will it fall squarely into budget commuter territory? Follow along with the auction on Cars and Bids to find out.

We’re always fans of dealer sales staff getting notice out to enthusiasts ahead of cars coming available via the usual dealership methods like pushing to the dealer website, AutoTrader or the like. In this case, it’s Audi Birmingham’s David Guerzon posting early pre-PDI shots of an Audi exclusive RS 6 performance in Nogaro Blue.

Other options confirmed by Guerzon are Matte Carbon Package, Executive Package, Driver Assistance Package, RS Sport Exhaust and Red Brake Calipers. He also shares in that post that the car will be sold for sticker without dealer markup.

If you reach out to Audi of Birmingham, ask for David Guerzon and thank him for posting it early for the rest of us.

With the B5 Audi RS 4 production beginning 25 years ago, we’re just now seeing cars that are qualified as importable. And while those early cars are basic cars in basic colors, it’s only a matter of time until the options begin rolling in. Getting ahead of the game and purchasing a car before it turns 25 is a great way to nail down a good price without the inflation of American buyers.

Got a friend in Europe who can store it? You’ll likely need one.

All that said, an RS2 in similar spec and mileage would be much more expensive than this B5 RS 4. Getting in on the RS 4 action early seems like a solid move for netting a much-loved enthusiast model.

One last thing, Nogaro Blue isn’t Audi exclusive. It was added as a stock color, but it’s icon status in the Audi fold is somewhat unique, so we included it anyway.

Despite evidence you may see here suggesting otherwise, Nogaro Blue as a paint color didn’t show up at Audi until the RS2 era. If you’re doing the math, that’s about a decade before this 1983 Audi quattro left the factory. Yet here it sits.

So how’d it happen? Auto Bordin, the Swiss dealer listing this car tells the story fairly comprehensively, and so we’re going to post the English translation below. In case you don’t have time for that though, its’ worth noting that the car received a considerable full restoration with complete color change to Nogaro Blue.

It’s interesting that an earlier pre-facelift quattro was chosen. Perhaps that’s a preference for the vertical grille and headlight design of the original. It’s also interesting that they kept the original seat leather that shows wear, although from a collector standpoint that was probably a smart move and the reasoning is explained in the full description.

So, has this car grabbed your attention yet? If so, let’s begin the full listing description below.

Audi Turbo quattro “Nogaro Edition” – An Urquattro like certainly not a second

An Audi Urquattro in the color nogaro blue – which Urquattro owner did not have this thought?
At the beginning probably no one, since the color only became popular with the Audi RS2 in the 90s. But at that time one could not imagine that this color would be so important for Audi that it could be called THE AUDI BLUE today. But it was not only Audi that had discovered this color for itself in the 90s. While it was called nogaro blue at Audi, it was called jazz blue at VW and maritime blue at Porsche. And since the RS2 was a collaboration between Audi and Porsche, they naturally decided to present this car in this special blue. Since the Audi RS2, almost all RS successor models have been associated with this color. So also the direct successor of the RS2, the RS4 B5 and even the S4 models, were gladly ordered in this color. A phenomenon of the 90s and early 2000s? No, even in 2014, Audi put a nogaro blue RS2 at the Geneva Motor Show together with the then most current Audi RS4 B8 on the stand and launched the “Nogaro Selection” and later also with the RS6 C7 as a limited “Nogaro Edition”. This color has become as historically important for Audi as the name “quattro” that people would like to use it to lift very special models again and again.

Let’s now come back to the previous train of thought, that every Urquattro owner probably had the idea of making his Urquattro like this when he saw the Audi RS2, but hardly anyone did it then….

No wonder, because an Urquattro was not disassembled and repainted so quickly, like a 911 from the 80s. And those who did it, usually did this in addition to the rust control and then hardly wanted to remove the windows or even the engine. So those who were then repainted were simply done à la “farmer painting”.

And to be fair enough, we would never have made this effort to want to do it better, because an Urquattro to paint, including engine compartment and without window rubber’s, means nothing more than work, work and work again… Unimaginable at that time, because the Urquattro used to have hardly the value it has today, where it would be worthwhile “more or less”. The question arises, why don’t you do it today, now that the Urquattro has finally become valuable enough? Quite simply, firstly, where are the spare parts for such a project and secondly, the Urquattro’s that you can buy today as a restoration object, are so rusty that it is almost reflected into an impossible project, if you then have to reshape each rusty sheet metal yourself. In the end, it is not a million Ferrari where this effort is worthwhile and a perfect, well-preserved Urquattro is certainly not taken apart for such a project nowadays.

You notice what we want to get. Actually, it would not be a thing of impossibility, but it is then so elaborate that no one wants to do it and so would be a newly built, nogaro blue Urquattro, something like a unique piece.

And it is precisely in front of such a Urquattro that we are now. And of course you ask yourself rightly – didn’t you just talk about the fact that it’s almost a thing of impossibility and yet we are now facing such an Urquattro? Now this question can only be answered by the following story.

For this we go back to the 90s. Where the then second owner of this Urquattro’s decided, when he got problems with the cylinder head gasket and he wanted to repair the engine again, he still saw the possibility of making his dream of the nogaro blue Urquattro come true. Because if we take out the engine to revise it, we can also take apart the rest of the Urquattro’s at the same time and have it professionally repainted, according to the words to his son at the time.

Said and done, the Urquattro was completely taken apart and taken to a renowned body shop near us. In the meantime, the owner went looking for spare parts. The bodywork itself was not enough for him, he also wanted to restore the vehicle and so many new parts from Audi had to come.

Connoisseurs are probably thinking now – Audi Urquattro and get new parts at AUDI/AMAG – great joke… but that was not the case in the 90s. He was able to order many new parts for the Urquattro, since it was still a current vehicle at the time and thus came to parts that one would only dream of today if one would get them new and original from Audi. Among other things a new KKK Turbo including collector, completely new cylinder head, various hoses, disc rubbers, complete decor and many other specific original parts….

The time in the body shop passed, because on the one hand they took the work seriously and on the other hand to keep the whole thing as economically as possible, it was agreed with the body shop that you could take enough time and you should just work on it when you have time. What you see in retrospect, you can never say to a body shop, because firstly there is never time left anyway and secondly it is not just a year, but then more than three years. But they just wanted a perfect result and so the body was made like that of a new car and extensively sealed with Dinitrol so that rust will never be an issue again.

As fate had, the owner unfortunately died before the Urquattro left the body shop. So that now the son of the deceased owner stood in front of an empty body and several parts. What do you do in such a situation? Not selling at all, this is a memory of the father, in the end you also helped with the project and on the other hand you can’t just assemble it quickly. It simply lacks the time and also the know-how, since you have not taken it apart 100% yourself.

In total, almost 30 years passed and no work was done on the vehicle until the son finally decided to sell the vehicle and it came to us in 2021.

We decided to take over the project. Not because we wanted to do this job, but because we were simply storn away when we saw the Urquattro in this color live. In addition, we liked the impeccable body condition, as well as all the new parts that were available.

At that time we did not know ourselves whether we wanted to do the Urquattro or not. On the one hand, the appeal was great, because we knew that there would never be a second nogaro blue Urquattro at this level and on the other hand we knew that it is not exactly without rebuilding such a vehicle from scratch and this even more so if you have not even taken it apart yourself, but someone else and this without pictures as help. There is probably nothing more complex than wanting to restore a German rally car, including turbo technology and vacuum lines until it no longer works and differential locks and electronics and and and…

To keep the whole thing short – after three winters where we said ourselves we always do a little something about it as soon as we have time, it is now finished. The nogaro blue Urquattro freshly shown as a veteran in July 2024 and to be honest, we wouldn’t want to do this a second time, but somehow you supplant the whole thing when you stand in front of the finished car – breathtakingly beautiful, especially outside when the sun shines on this color.

Our ultimate goal was to make the vehicle as if it were ordered from the factory in the special color nogaro blue. Say no tuning or tinted windows, white rims, dark taillights since Jg. 1983, no blue spoiler, etc. Even from the decor it had to look like fresh from the factory with all the emblems etc. Only this and no different is seen from our point of view, the nogaro blue Urquattro, a tribute to the later RS2.

We also do not want to lean so far out of the window and say that this is probably the only nogaro blue Urquattro that was made at this level, yet we are convinced that hardly anyone has ever made this effort.

The pictures speak for themselves, even if there are only 16, we have of course archived more pictures about the whole process for you. Nevertheless, you must have seen the vehicle in real life, not to mention driving. Because here you can see all the new parts, how powerful the newly built 5 cylinder turbo engine accelerates and this fortunately without a catalyst as with the later unsaleable Edition models…

It is a Urquattro for individualists, not for original fetishists. And yet it is not a vehicle that one would not describe as original at first glance. As a successful rally vehicle, the Urquattro always had its charm of wanting to have it in a different color. Until now it was only available in red or white as an “exciting color” and now it is available for ONE lucky one even in nogaro blue.

With the B9 Audi range having ended production to make way for the B10-generation of A5, enthusiasts seeking a fine example of the outgoing model are left having to fend for what’s on the market. So, when we find a compelling car like the S5 Sportback and it’s painted an even more compelling color like Nogaro Blue, you have our attention.

Red leather may be a polarizing choice to pair with Nogaro Blue, though we’d still argue it’s very attractive.

Finding a sought-after Audi exclusive build in new car inventory is a bit of a Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt for big kids. Such is the case for this new car inventory Audi SQ7 fully loaded and in an excellent spec with Prestige equipment level, Night Vision Assistant and Trailer Hitch packages. Even better, it’s got Audi exclusive Nogaro Blue paint that is iconic in the eyes of Audi aficionados having been originally popularized on the Audi RS2 Avant. Given the tall wagon-like nature of the SQ7, we think it’s a good fit.

Inside, whomever ordered this specified it with Arras Red leather. Frankly, we’re surprised they didn’t go with black leather in order to appeal to all the people who would love and can’t find an Audi RS 6 RS Tribute Limited Edition. Red is an acquired taste on a car like this, undoubtedly handsome and yet polarizing.

Whatever the case, this is a very compelling car. Somebody should grab it before it’s gone.

Ever since it dropped as “RS Blue” on the original RS2, Nogaro Blue rose to legend status. Adding it to any Audi station wagon immediately amplifies appeal given the heritage, inspiring the building of countless Audi exclusive long roofs from mundane small displacement wagons to the most bruiser of RS cars. Whatever the case, they’ve got our attention and this time around it’s Audi Fresno with the A6 allroad you see here.

This particular car is part of Audi Fresno’s new car fleet, so golf clap to that dealership for going off script and ordering something this cool. Equipment is Premium Plus, likely meant to keep the car from venturing too close to six figures that tends to be RS 6 territory.

Update: This ran in the Audi exclusive Classifieds Group we manage on Facebook. A user in there, John Finley shared the following first hand information. “Saw it yesterday. The fender trim is matte Nogaro, which was kind of weird but didn’t look bad. It was a gift from Audi, so base trim. If anybody wants to go look at it, ask for Aidan Sherman. Good salesman and loves wagons as well.”

    Why we love mention it:

Wait, it’s a low mileage Nogaro Blue S2 Avant and it’s an “Acquired Taste” car? What gives. Okay, yes, it’s perfect spec color choice and modifications that are there appear to be tasteful, but if our translation tool is reading that ad correctly, it’s a color change to Nogaro Blue from the original color listed as Burnt Orange for which the seller states and Apple translated “according to Audi only three vehicles in the color were delivered”.

We’re not entirely sure what “Burnt Orange” is. We’ll keep looking, though it’s listed in English so we’re not translating there. Perhaps they mean Audi’s Glut Orange (a.k.a. Solar Orange) where “glut” translates from German to “embers”. Even still, the rarity of it is kind of less impactful when the car has received a color change. It makes you wonder why they didn’t change the color on a more common specimen, but who knows.

Another interesting note about the color, we don’t think Audi was producing Glut Orange at that point, while Audi exclusive builds were largely limited at the time to factory specials or “Lifestyle Colors” that we’ve covered on this site before. If so, that color was likely Inka Yellow Pearl Effect and we’ve seen that on an RS2 from the time period. It is indeed very rare.

Worth noting, the seller also states that the engine bay still needs addressing regarding the color change, though no photos of that are provided. We also used AI tools to clean up some of the photos, specifically distracting elements in the background. In each of the photos we edited, the only change made to the car was to fix a bent registration plate. However, please use the original photos as the final reference as we’re just passing along this car’s availability.

So, if we’re translating this listing accurately, technically this is a factory tailored car that was resprayed to a totally different factory tailor color. You don’t see that often. And though it may be a color change car, we suspect it’s also about as affordable as you’ll find a turbocharged Nogaro Blue Audi B4 Avant. RS2s, even in rough shape, always seem to be above €50,000 nowadays. This one looks well kept, low mileage and a bargain way to get an RS2 without stepping up to an RS2.

This is one of our Euro market finds, so the usual caveats apply for our primarily North American readership. For Europe and other markets, we focus on cars older than 25 years, meaning a relatively easy import into the USA. This is often done by working with firms such as our friends at Orchid Euro, you can have the car purchased, transported to port, shipped to America and cleared through customs for clients seeking this sort of service.

    Why we love it:

When it rains, it pours. Just a few days ago, we featured a different Audi exclusive Nogaro Blue RS 7, and here we have another. Albeit not a Performance model like our prior post, this RS 7 packs plenty of performance courtesy of the deep aftermarket support that brands like Audi benefit from. All told, this RS 7 is said to have about 800 horsepower, which is certainly more than enough to do just about anything- legal or not. Other highlights include HRE Wheels, an H&R lowering module, software from APR, and full paint protection film. So whether it’s this particular RS 7 or the stock example featured previously, a Tailored RS 7 in Nogaro has never been more attainable.

  • Color Check: Nogaro Blue vs. RS Blue at 2014 Geneva Motor Show

Color Check: Nogaro Blue vs. RS Blue at 2014 Geneva Motor Show

Given we recently highlighted the transformation of the Audi RS2’s iconic RS Blue (rsblau; pearl effect UNI; M8; Audi) to Nogaro Blue (nogaroblau; pearl effect UNI; Z5M; Audi) as Audi moved on from Porsche production of the RS2, we remembered a certain layout of the Audi stand at the Geneve Motor Show and wanted to revisit the visual comparison.

Back in 2014, new car motor shows were in their heyday, and Geneva may very well have been queen of them all. Sure, the Frankfurt IAA with its many show halls may have been bigger, but Geneva was where car manufacturers, carrozzeria and even the aftermarket focused on design and performance for the super rich. Audi Sport (then quattro GmbH) always brought their latest sporting models and often built in Audi exclusive one-off specification. For 2014, timed with the launch of the RS 4 Nogaro selection edition, the brand from Ingolstadt brought several blue examples including a vintage Audi RS2 on loan from Audi Tradition.

As we now know, that vintage RS2 Avant was painted RS Blue, while the Audi exclusive RS 4 Avant and RS 5 Coupe seen in these photos is painted Nogaro Blue. Since Audi didn’t reformulate the colors, they are visually identical. That’s not the easiest to see under the super intense show lights of the Geneva Motor Show and while parked on polished white floors of the Audi stand, but it’s still the case.

Interestingly, though the RS 4 Nogaro selection edition press release dropped at Geneva, the car on the stand doesn’t match the specification of the limited series production car. Though that car long predates this site, we’ve gone ahead and retro published the original press release on the Nogaro selection edition along with detailed official shots found in Audi France’s archives. Those period PR photos clearly show the special edition had two-tone black and blue Alcantara seats, plus details like nomenclature on the shift knob and badging at the rear. They also had silver optic wheels, while the car on the Audi stand that year has gloss black and machined finish on the same wheel design.

So what was this RS 4 at Geneva? As mentioned, Audi regularly built tailored Audi exclusive specifications for its booth show cars in those years. Especially on press days when these photos were shot, star cars and RS models frequently had specifications not from the standard order book. The RS 4 Avant shown here was likely an effective one-off by Audi exclusive, but not an actual Nogaro selection edition. The matching Nogaro Blue RS 5 Coupé is more obviously a single Audi exclusive build, with tan seats and grey stitching.

Neither Audi of America nor Audi Canada never sold the RS 4 in North America, much less the RS 4 Nogaro selection edition. However, Audi of America product managers did dip into some of the components (namely the blue Alcantara seats) to create a special Nogaro edition S4 that is highly prized by owners who still have them.
