Initially created as a Paint to Sample Plus color in 2017 and added to the standard Paint to Sample palate in 2023, Alex Grey has quite the story behind it. Tracing it’s roots back to 1962 when Dutch Police needed a faster horse to ensure safety on roads that at the time were without speed limits, the Rijkspolitie turned it’s attention to Porsche and their 356. This created a partnership that resulted in a fleet of 507 Porsches in total until the Dutch opted for something more ordinary and cancelled the program in 1996. As they are want to do, Porsche celebrated the partnership with a special edition in 2017, contracting Studio Piet Boon to do-develop a color and livery for the car. Alex Grey as shown here was the result, which oddly enough is in no way representative of the aforementioned Rijkspolitie liveried cars. But what it is, is a very deep, incredibly vibrant Grey- much more vibrant than Audi’s Nardo, and much more distinct than Fashion Grey or even Grey Black.

If you’re seeking a Sonderwunsch special that makes simple paint to sample builds look passé, the 911 Targa 4 GTS you see her definitely qualifies. On the outside, it’s a subtle play dipping into Paint to Sample services for a decidedly hard-to-spot derivative of silver.

It’s not that Polar Silver Metallic isn’t a great choice. It is, but most passers by of this car will likely pass it by. Should they peek inside though, there’s no missing the Agave Green leather. Dig in further and the blue accents on stitching, green and blue on the gauges, and even the Porsche crest logos on the wheels show a much deeper affinity for continuing a bold theme.

We love it. We love it so much that we’ve featured this car when it was on the market before. For the record, this highly distinctive and unique 992 Targa 4 GTS has been featured on this site before. Last July, the car was at Ferrari San Diego, and has returned now in Marietta, Georgia.

Kudos to Gas Motor Cars who have put up a much deeper mix of photos, and shots we’d argue do a better job showing the true green of the Agave leather, as well as the many other points of Sonderwunsch details.

The iconic Porsche color of Irish Green looks the business on a 60s/70s F-body 911, and really everything else in between. Such is the reason that Irish Green is a regular hit on the Paint to Sample color palette for an in-the-know buyer looking to spec their car in Porsche heritage.

What’s the origin of Irish Green at Porsche? It first appeared in 1964 on the Porsche 356C models, and would quickly become Ferry Porsche’s favorite Green… which is saying something because Ferry Porsche loved greens in general.

In the case of this GT3 Touring, the Irish Green paint is paired with a subdued black leather interior that really harks the era from which Irish Green emerged.

Not exactly one that rolls off the tongue, but as Juliet once told Romeo- what’s in a name? In this case, measuring a generous 24 characters spread over 7 syllables, quite a lot actually. Fish Silvergrey Metallic was added to Porsche’s Paint to Sample program in 2023, and meshes the aforementioned silvergrey with a tasteful hint of green. Nearly chromaflair-lite in execution and cost, Fish Silvergrey Metallic as seen here is quietly making a serious case for itself in the world of Tailored Driver.

Paint to Sample Albert Blue is an interesting color choice for a 911 GT3 RS – a color from Porsche’s rich heritage that’s somewhat subdued for such an in-your-face car as a GT3 RS. Pair it with red graphics though (not to mention carbon fiber laden Weissach Package) and the overall look becomes decidedly more bold.

One hard-to-miss element of this build is the matching blue and red tartan fabric on the seats. We’ve not seen this pattern before offered by Porsche, and the listing makes no mention of Sonderwunsch touches, fabric, tartan or plaid. That said, there are plenty of companies out there specializing in making replacement seat centers for Porsche’s carbon buckets where their modularity in construction allow for additional special touches that can take on a factory installed appearance. This may be that – handsome, but perhaps not factory and something you may want to verify if that is important to you.

It’s sadly not as often as we’d hope that something comes across our desk from seemingly out of far left field and leaves us speechless, but that’s exactly where we find ourselves this morning. Paint to Sample Gold Bronze Metallic is nowhere on our radar, and after seeing it here- we’d say that’s a miss. More Bronze than Gold with a vibrancy helped by generous metallic flake, the color is stunning. No doubt that the black wheels, bucket seats, yellow belts and bright red fire extinguisher helps to juxtapose the color with a focused seriousness, but we’ll count ourselves among the converted.

“Probably the only one” says the description of this Tailored Driver, and if that is indeed the case, shame on the well-to-do of the late 80’s. Porsche’s Paint to Sample Turquoise is seldom seen, another shame which we can only chalk up to a lack of awareness. The color is vibrant and familiar yet completely underutilized- so much so that even Rennbow only has images of two factory-built examples. We’d be remiss to not also mention that exclusivity comes at a steep cost ($149,000 for a 3.2!), but as they say- go find another.

This Tailored Driver marks the second instance of Auratium Green to grace our pages, and frankly that’s a shame. This pale pastel green has all the makings of a future classic, yet it’s still as relevant on this 718 Spyder RS as it was on the 356 where it debuted. Inoffensive yet in-your-face, we think anyone who opts for Auratium will be quite pleased with the result.

While the Porsche 911 964 generation was definitely sold in the United States, the last of the primarily hand built and upright headlight air-cooled 911s has become a rare and valuable commodity thanks to the likes of Singer and RWB conversions. Given that, seeking out cars in Europe can not only net more selection, it can also pay a bonus with rare specifications most American buyers weren’t likely to order. We think this green-on-green 1991 911 Carrera 2 Targa qualifies.

This Belgian-delivered Targa is painted Oak Green Metallic, listed as a Paint to Sample by the dealer. While we know Oak Green was available during the 964 production run at times, we’re not certain about its availability for the Belgian market in 1991 specifically. Regardless, it’s a rare and attractive color on a 964, and that’s made even more appealing and rare with the unexpected interior specification.

Primarily, the interior specification is most unforgettable thanks to its extremely rare Sherwood Green Leather – optional in Europe, but a rare find to be sure. Other options for this car include English labeling, headlight washers, standard bolster electrically operated seats for both driver and passenger, cassette and coin holder, power antenna and speakers, no amplifier, no airbag, lighting regulation, split rear seat backrest, and velours carpet in trunk.

You’ll note the same green finish on elements such as the no-airbag steering wheel and shiftknob. Here, in these high touchpoint locations, the green is starting to wear off. These pieces are unobtainium and the car is likely worth more with them still unrestored and in the car, but they’re worth noting.

The price on this car isn’t especially low for a 964 Targa, but the mileage is also quite low and the specification is highly unique.

Despite the potential for being dismissed as simply ‘beige’ by onlookers, Porsche’s Geyser Grey Metallic is a pretty interesting color in the eyes of Tailored Driver. Most commonly seen on the 50th Anniversary 911, Geyser is an off-white with a fairly subtle metallic flake for some added dynamism. The 991-generation GT3 Touring is a home run in our books, but the aforementioned Geyser Grey Metallic paint and hounds tooth insert Carbon Buckets elevate this 911 to grand slam territory.
