    Why We Love It:

We’re hitting a theme this week of cars that have experienced color changes, and this one may be the most interesting yet. Get past the fact that it seems like you rarely if ever see a 964-generation 911 Turbo in Mint Green (much less one with less than 200 miles on the odometer), because that’s just the beginning of the story. You see, this car left the factory painted Paint to Sample Gulf Orange (gulforange; 019; non-metallic UNI; Porsche) with black interior.

According to the ad, the car received a full restoration presumably with color change by the massive classic Porsche dealer in Germany where it is currently for sale. They also have a comprehensive list of options. And while we suspect most all of it came on the car from the factory, the mention of a Mint Green shift knob and the sight of the mint green Porsche Tequipment steering wheel do make us wonder if those were fitted in the (Gulf Orange) car from new, or added when the car switched to Mint Green.

The list of equipment is as follows:

    139 Heated seats, left seat
    220 limited slip differential 40%
    231 Michelin tires
    288 headlight cleaning system
    327 Radio “Symphony RDS”
    340 heated seats, right seat
403 cup cast wheel, 17 inch
    423 cassettes and coin containers
    425 rear window wiper
437 Comfort seat on the left, electrically adjustable
438 comfort seat right, electrically adjustable
    441 Radio preparation
    481 manual transmission
    488 Inscription German
    490 sound package
    494 additional amplifiers
499 version for the Federal Republic of Germany
562 Airbag driver and passenger side
    573 air conditioning
    605 headlight range adjustment
    650 Electric sunroof
    659 on-board computer
    685 Split rear seats
    930 rear seat covers, leather
975 trunk lining with velor carpet
981 leather interior without seat covers
    983 front seat covers, leather
X33 engine performance increase 911 Turbo
    XK7 shiftgearknob mintgreen
    XU1 Remote control central locking

Whatever the case, this is an incredibly unique car in an incredibly unique and period correct color. Mint Green had just been introduced at the time as one of the Carrera Cup colors. While uncommon in general, it was most common in the 964-era 911 Carrera RS, and occasionally seen on other period cars like 911 Cabriolets and the occasional 968.

    Why we love it:

We don’t play favorites at Tailored Driver, but if we did, Porsche Oak Green Metallic would be a strong contender. A deeper shade than Aston’s Racing Green, Oak Green features a gold metallic flake that genuinely pops in direct sunlight. While it was introduced in the ’70s, Oak has seen a resurgence recently and we’ve seen it featured on both Audi and Porsche models via their respective Tailoring programs. Here it’s been applied to arguably the most exciting of Porsche’s current topless lineup, where the yellow brake calipers do a great job of further enhancing Oak Green’s aforementioned gold flake.

Market Find: 2015 Porsche Cayenne S e-Hybrid in Peridot Metallic

    Price: $19,911

    Location: Allentown, PA
    Marketplace listing: Link

    Why we love it:

One of the best parts of Tailored Driver population is the deep research required on the more obscure finds and referrals sent to us by our dedicated readership. While newer and more common are admittedly fairly easy to decipher, the older stuff that excites us can also frustrate. Case in point is this Tailored Driver, a 2015 Porsche Cayenne S e-Hyrbid found on Facebook Marketplace. Search for a 2015 order guide, and pickings are slim. From the lone brochure we were able to find, it seems that Periodot Metallic was indeed a ‘special order’ color for Cayenne in 2015 for the sum of $3,150. But in validating with Porsche Club of America’s Rennbow, it seems that 2015 was a gap year in formally offering Peridot on Porsche’s brand-saving SUV. Further, while we can find a few other examples of Peridot on Cayennes of the period, they are generally GTS variants. Just one Peridot e-hybrid popped up in our searches, which due to lack of VIN info shared, very well may be this one.

So while this is undeniably rare, whether this is a true Paint to Sample- it hard to say. What we can confidently say is that the extremely subtle juxtaposition of Peridot on the body and Porsche’s e-hybrid identifying Acid Green on the brakes and gauge needles is so close that it nearly seems like a slight discoloration rather than a purposeful brand-play.

As always, massive thank you to Chris for the tip!

  • Market Find: 2024 Porsche Paint to Sample Aetna Blue 718 Cayman GT4 RS

Market Find: 2024 Porsche Paint to Sample Aetna Blue 718 Cayman GT4 RS

    What: 2024 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS

    Location: Porsche Danbury, CT
    Dealer listing: Link

    Why we love it:

A true classic that made its debut on Porsche’s 356, Aetna Blue (or Etna Blue) is equal parts pastel and vibrant. Decidedly darker than Gulf Blue, Etna gives Tailors the opportunity to achieve a result that stands out in a tasteful way while still inspiring conversation. Per Rennbow, the color has seen a resurgence in popularity as of late and we can absolutely see why- the heritage color fits impeccably with color trends of the past few years. Of note, Aetna appears quite similar to Cavalry Blue, which Toyota used on their TRD PRO trim 4Runner back in 2018.

Location: Porsche San Luis Obispo, CA
    Dealer listing: Link

    Why we love it:

The 997.2 Turbo S is, in most cases, a Porsche model which wears the ‘good value’ for money badge proudly. Enthusiasts have overlooked the shocking performance due to a lack of engagement from the PDK-only transmission, and as such the 997 Turbo S can often be had for a song- even more so should it’s roof be made of fabric rather than metal. This Tailored Driver is not one of those ‘value’ examples, but when it comes to spec, this is incredibly enticing. Paint to Sample Mexico Blue was a bold choice in 2011, but it works, especially when juxtaposed with Yellow brake calipers and silver center lock wheels. All of this is to say there’s plenty of ‘value’ in this blue chip Turbo S even if the price is a bit high compared to others in market. We think when appreciation for this variant hits, it’ll hit incredibly hard.

    Why we love it:

We’ll never tire of 997 and older generation Paint (and Leather) to Sample Porsche models as this was a time before social media notoriety, when you either found out about the Paint to Sample program through a forum, or through your well-informed Dealer. In other words, if you had about $4,000, some level of patience and a vision, there was a good shot your newly ordered Porsche would be a one-off. This particular Tailored Driver, painted in Paint to Sample Linen Grey Metallic which was introduced in the late 80s, is almost a light Champaign when the sun hits it at just the right angle. Combined with Cocoa extended leather and a 6-speed manual, this early 997 is a downright intriguing proposition for the aspiring Tailored Driver who has $45,000 burning a hole in their pocket.

    Why we love it:

At this point, I think it’s legally required to mention that Porsche’s Paint to Sample Slate Grey was Steve McQueen’s favorite color any time the hue is seen or spoken about. Cliché, sure, but also for good reason- the so-called King of Cool reigned during one of the more fondly-remembered eras in pop culture history, and of all the wild pastels, he put his money on Grey. Like true coolness, Slate Grey is a color that is just as in vogue today as it was then, and here we see it applied to what could also be argued as the Porsche brand’s coolest product, the 718 Spyder. On the inside, we see extended Bordeaux Red leather with Black race-tex inserts, 18-way seats, and a PDK gearbox. Subtle, comfortable, and effortlessly cool.

    Why we love it:

At the offices of Tailored Driver, we love to put ourselves in the shoes of our Market Find’s original Tailors and try to imagine how conversations went while curating and submitting each order. With this Paint to Sample Meteor Grey Metallic 991-generation GT3, we’d assume that a 997-generation GT3 owner walked into the Porsche dealer in Plano, TX after being told that the then-new 2018 model would be available with three pedals for what was assumed to be the last time. “Great!” they said, “Order it just like my 997 and let me know when to pick it up.” You see, Meteor Grey Metallic was a fairly common standard color during the 997 years if GT3, as were Carbon brakes and Leather seats with Race-Tex accents. In other words, this exact spec, minus the black wheels, massively updated tech, and the benefits a new generation present. If we’re right, and we think we may be, this is an extremely cool example of forward-dating a proven formula to achieve a surprisingly unique Tailored Driver.

    Why we love it:

It’s often said (or at least inferred) that the BMW M3/4 is the last stop on a car enthusiasts way to Porsche ownership. If that’s the case, this Paint to Sample San Marino Blue 718 Cayman GTS is one hell of a proof of concept. Initially a BMW color (code B51/5), San Marino Blue was added to Porsche’s Paint to Sample program as part of their ‘approved’ list in 2023 (code W87). So here we have a non-911 in a Paint to Sample color that required additional approval for production, with a naturally aspirated four-liter flax-six paired to a manual transmission. For those looking to place a bet against depreciation, this seems like a great opportunity.

    Why we love it:

In terms of rarity, 996-generation Paint to Sample Porsches are up there. Graded on that curve, this particular 996 Turbo Cab with X50 package is simply off the charts. Draped in Porsche Paint to Sample Zircon Blue Metallic- a color so rare that Rennbow can only muster a shrug and a Google search of the color shows this car as the only result- this Tailored Driver also represents a bit of a question mark for us. Undoubtedly a true ‘match this’ request from Tailor to Factory, touch up paint for the color points to code W49, Zircon Blue and the color is further confirmed by an old Bring a Trailer listing. Oddly enough, per Rennbow and other sources W49 was later used for Grigio Granito Metallic, a fairly dynamic Grey with pronounced metallic flake. While full details are yet to be revealed, finds like this are the stuff of Tailored Driver dreams, and we’re incredibly excited to have preserved it in our records.
