    If there was ever a car that fit the Tailored Driver ethos, this is quite possibly it. George and I had met previously, but really bonded over driving then-new Samoa Orange Audi models- his a TT competition, mine the boss’s S5 – and attending just about every VW Group event in the Mid-Atlantic. Denis was a big part of that as well. Fast forward a few years, and George dropped an RS 6 Tribute edition in our group chat, a car that had until recently been impossible to attain stateside, pulling trigger shortly after. In those ways and others, we can directly trace the roots of Tailored to this color and later this model. For us, that’s plenty of reason to get excited. For others, perhaps it’s the thought of a wagon in an R8 sourced hue, massaged by APR that’d leave any road-going and box stock R8 in the dust. Regardless, this Tailored Driver would make for one hell of a statement piece.

    Though popular amongst Audi exclusive clientele, Samoa Orange wasn’t an Audi exclusive color on the R8 GT. In fact, it is believed to have debuted as a launch color on that first limited-series GT Coupé, then has graced a few other special editions over the years.

    Dropping on a car such as the R8 GT is a great way to make a paint color popular of course, a car where really any color inspires and looks spectacular. In the case of the Samoa Orange R8 GTs though, relatively common amongst R8 GTs, we’d argue it’s one of the most memorable color combinations for the car… and that’s before you consider most had matching orange stitching on the inside.

    This one is particularly low mileage, and worth a second look.

    SUMMARY:

    Believed to be used initially as a launch color for the R8 GT, Samoa Orange Metallic (samoaorange; metallic UNI; X2U; Audi) embraced Audi’s heritage for earth tones in the late 2000s, a time that also birthed Ipanema Brown and Teak Brown. This fiery dark orange would later be used as more of a standard color when the first-generation R8 got its facelift, then later on the TT competition. It even shows up on an R8 Mk2 on screen as Tony Stark’s R8 Coupé in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. As a result, Samoa Orange Metallic remains a popular choice in the extended Audi exclusive color palette.

Launched initially on the first R8 GT, Samoa Orange is an Audi exclusive finish on this current-generation RS 3 sedan.

    We caught this car and a few photos by Ryan Raymond on the Audi Club North America Facebook Group and it looks fantastic. Whether paired with the factory black wheels or aftermarket gold, it’s hard not to love this car.
