Color Check: Speed Yellow 993 Carrera RS and 997 GT3 at Air Water 2025

Events like Air|Water bring a wave of vibrant colors from the Porsche community. When it’s thoughtfully curated, it feels like being a kid in a candy store. @PTSRS and Air|Water teamed up to present “Colors of Air|Water,” and we spent hours capturing content for our site. The rain didn’t stop us. It added mood and contrast, bringing each color to life in both overcast light and the bright California sun.

We’re continuing our series with Speed Yellow. We’ll dive deeper in a future Color Focus feature, but here’s a quick summary of what makes it stand out.

Speed Yellow (Speedgelb, nonmetallic, 12G / L12G / X4) was introduced in the early 1990s and became a signature Porsche color through the air cooled and early water cooled eras. According to the Rennbow database, it first appeared around the 1993 model year on cars like the 964 Carrera RS 3.8 and 968, and remained available through the 997 generation, officially ending in 2012. Though it was later replaced by the brighter Racing Yellow, Speed Yellow continues today through Porsche’s Paint to Sample (PTS) program.

Where many Porsche colors lean toward subtlety or historic significance, Speed Yellow channels Porsche’s racing spirit like few other colors. It’s bold, unapologetic, and instantly recognizable. It’s closely associated with GT models, Turbo models, and even limited production examples like the Speed Yellow 968 coupes and cabs built for North America.

Browsing the Bramo app, we did find the profile for this 993 Carrera RS. Not hard to spot, given how rare this car is. The owner, Darin, states: “The 993 Carrera RS is one of the most desirable driver-focused 911s to ever leave the factory, with a perfect blend of classic 911 analogue feel and then-modern 1990s mechanical technology. 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera RS chassis number WP0ZZZ99ZTS390456 is a highly original example with just under 37,X” The photos also show Japanese license plates, which suggests this might be a Japan import. Would love to learn more.

The 997 GT3 finished in Speed Yellow checks all the boxes for a future classic, and it’s already highly sought after today. As one of the last analog GT3s before the shift to electric steering and dual clutch gearboxes, the 997 GT3 blends raw performance with a driving experience that feels connected and pure.

Powered by the legendary Mezger engine, derived from Porsche’s motorsport programs, it delivers naturally aspirated power with a soundtrack and response that enthusiasts still chase today. Add to that a six speed manual, rear wheel drive, and no unnecessary frills, and you have a formula that defines what a driver’s car should be.

Check out the video and gallery below for a walk around of both cars.

Unlike the much more common Porsche 911 Carrera RS of the 964 era, the 911 Carrera RS 3.8 is an actual homologation special. Okay, technically the “plain” Carrera RS boasted a lot of changes consistent with the then-current Carrera Cup series, but the 911 Carrera RS 3.8 was built literally to homologate the car for international GT racing requirements.

Beginning the with shell of a Porsche 911 Turbo used for its wider track, each car was transported to Weissach’s racing department so that it could be hand built. Lightweighting ensued, limited not just to deletion of unnecessary equipment but also introducing aluminum equivalents of doors and front trunk lid from the RS 3.6. The car’s RS front spoiler got an extra lip for improved downforce, while other changes included replacement of the foglights with air ducts for the oil cooler, a larger adjustable rear wing, plus 3mm gauge glass for side and rear windows.

Those are just the visual changes. This was a Porsche homologation special after all, which means the chassis got its share of changes too. A larger diameter adjustable anti-roll bar, strut brace, Bilstein suspension, Turbo brakes, reprogrammed ABS, and deletion of power steering all added to the car’s capabilities. Beyond that, it rolled on three-piece 18-inch Speedline Cup wheels in 9-inch width at the front and 11-inches at the rear.

Under the fiberglass engine cover was the M64/04 3.8-liter flat six. That motor was derived form the same 3.6 as the Carrera RS, though it was bored out to 102mm while stroke was retained. Lightweight pistons with shorter wrist pins and reduced head height were also part of the design, as were six individual throttle bodies positioned close to the inlet ports. There was a custom inlet manifold and larger valves with lightweight rockers, not to mention a twin-pipe exhaust system.

Only 55 examples of the 911 Carrera RS 3.8 were built, plus another 49 Carrera RSRs, which was enough satisfy the FIA’s homologation requirement of 100 cars. Interestingly, only one road car was required by the rule, though Porsche shrewdly built quite a few more in order to net some additional income. This was, by the way, the 964 era where Porsche was struggling to stay afloat financially.

This specific car was built in 1993 and is one of twelve examples to be built in Speed Yellow. The seatbacks of the car’s Recaro Pole Position seats were color matched to the body, while the rest of the interior was trimmed in black leather along with contrasting grey seat inserts just as we tend to see in the Carrera RS.

The car was first delivered to Porsche Zentrum Bielefeld in Germany in October 1993, then was exported to Japan before again returning to Europe in 2007. It’s currently located in Paris, France, though its age would make it an easy import into North America.

While historically Speed Yellow is a Porsche color, as we’ve proven before Stuttgart’s finest hues tend to translate incredibly well to other German brand models. Shown here on an F80-generation M3 Competition with all the right boxes ticked- Carbon roof, Cloth seats, 6 Speed manual- and fairly low mileage, it’s a compelling package. Tailored Driver fans will also note the location of this car, Brooklyn Auto Sales, as they’re a similarly minded outfit with more than a few Tailored cars at any given time.

As frequent visitors have learned- we’re massive fans of the 997-generation 911. The right size, modern (enough) tech, and still hints of that analog driving experience, the 997 also had the benefit of being the real start of Porsche’s endless variant strategy and proliferation of Paint to Sample. This particular 997 in Paint to Sample Speed Yellow has another big thing going for it, being a Speedster. Consider it an unexpected must-have for the 911 collector who already has the numerous ‘traditional’ GT models, awaiting its next steward.

    Why We Love It:

There are fewer and fewer deals to be had in the Porsche world, particularly amongst rare models, performance models or in rare colors. That’s why the never-sold-new-in-America 968 Clubsport is a favorite of ours.

Built at the end of the front-engined so-called transaxle era, the 968 was the final evolution of the 924/944 lineage. By the end of the run, the 968 featured a normally-aspirated 3.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Other than an exceedingly rare 968 Turbo S, the 968 Clubsport was the most extreme of the range. It featured a track-tuned chassis, 50:50 weight distribution and further excellent kit from the factory including larger Cup wheels and optional Recaro Pole Position. Six colors were offered, including Grand Prix White, Black, Guards Red, Maritime Blue and Speed Yellow.

Yes, Speed Yellow was a standard color, on elf six . So, the car you see here isn’t a Paint to Sample Porsche. Even still, we believe it’s worth mentioning. That’s even more-so in this case, because it also has the optional color-matched Recaro Pole Position shell seats and is priced very competitively on the 968 Clubsport spectrum.

This car does have a few modifications worth noting for collectors. This includes a cage, Momo steering wheel, upgraded sport suspension and a 993 “Big Reds” brake upgrade. We’re guessing it was someone’s track toy, a task at which most 968 Clubsports excel.

The dealer also states that the car is damage-free.

This is one of our Euro market finds, so the usual caveats apply for our primarily North American readership. For Europe and other markets, we focus on cars older than 25 years, meaning a relatively easy import into the USA. This is often done by working with firms such as our friends at Orchid Euro, you can have the car purchased, transported to port, shipped to America and cleared through customs for clients seeking this sort of service.

  • Market Find: Paint to Sample Speed Yellow Porsche Macan

Market Find: Paint to Sample Speed Yellow Porsche Macan

While we could opine as to why exactly Porsche’s Macan seems to be the least ran when it comes to their Paint to Sample program despite being one of their ‘volume’ models, we’d prefer to take the middle ground and simply call it a shame. We’re fans of the Porsche Macan for a number of reasons, and one of our founders uses his for daily duty with great pleasure. So when a Macan pops on our radar having been graced by the Paint to Sample treatment, we’re happy to feature it here on Tailored Driver.

This particular Paint to Sample Speed Yellow Porsche Macan (VIN: WP1AA2A54RLB04475) provides a striking contrast from the grey, white, or black examples we usually see. One has to wonder if it was ordered as a companion piece to a different Speed Yellow Porsche in the original Tailor’s fleet- perhaps an older 911, or maybe even a 968 Clubsport.

Having covered just 7,744 miles and being a 2024 model year, it’s clear however that this was more of a Macan for the moment as opposed to a tenured companion. With the all-new EV Macan making it’s way through US dealers, we sure hope the replacement for this Tailored Driver shares an equally bold hue. Few manufacturers have grander factory showrooms than BMW Welt in Bimmer’s home town of Münich, Germany. Rolling through M Town and the BMW Museum, it’s always a pleasure to catch sight of the latest BMW Group models, not to mention special builds like this yellow M5 Touring.

Just in case you’re not passing through the space regularly, or not an M Town local, we find the BMW Welt | BMW Museum to be an excellent and constant reminder of why we need to get back to Münich as much as possible. Why? They post photos of display cars like this BMW Individual Speed Yellow M5 Touring.

Worth noting on that color, “Speed Yellow” is not an uncommon name for yellow paint codes. This one is attributed to BMW Individual, so their recipe for an eye-catching sporting yellow.

Stroll around the M Town and you’ll find display zones for BMW M, BMW i, Rolls-Royce, MINI, a huge BMW brand shop… and you’ll also find cars like this. In a post world auto show era, places like M Town are where you’ll find these special factory builds on display. Should you find yourself in Bavaria, you should make a point of stopping.

Have you ever wanted to be Chris Harris? Former presenter on Top Gear, legendary YouTube reviewer, automotive journalist and generally beloved petrolhead about town? Well unfortunately you can’t, but here’s a great opportunity to be just like him.

Nearly identical to his daily driver, this PTS Speed Yellow Porsche 911 GT3 Touring (VIN: WP0AC2A97KS149176) could be your first class ticket to imitation- and they say that’s the most sincere form of flattery. But unlike his daily, this has many, many fewer miles (just 228!), wheels finished in black and features Carbon Ceramic Brakes from factory.

Our more eagle-eyed readers will be quick to note that Chris had his car wrapped in a slightly darker variant of Yellow, which is fair. But if you’ve got the $299,900 to acquire this Tailored Driver, certainly you’ve got the scratch to follow Mr. Harris’ lead, should you choose to do so.

Atlanta. Bringing historic Porsche paint colors into your home for the first time, Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA) today announced a unique collaboration with premium paint brand, Backdrop, to inspire unique interior designs. Coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the very first Porsche taking to the road, the two brands, each defined by their use of color, have selected the following assortment of vibrant colors from several eras of Porsche sports cars:

    • Irish Green: First seen in 1964 on a 356C sports car, the dark hunter green shade is also one of the first colors to grace the Porsche 911. It’s a color as timeless as the sports car itself.
    • Speed Yellow: This vibrant yellow first appeared on the Porsche 911 in 1991. Not for the shy or Sunday driver, the color is distinctly tied to the sports car and the Porsche brand.
    • Ruby Star: Dating back to 1991 and seen on Porsche 911, 928 and 944 models over the years, Ruby Star is a deep magenta red that is distinct, bold and joyous.
    • Riviera Blue: An electric bright blue, the head-turning and audacious color was developed in 1994 and has been seen on the 911, 928, and 968 models.

The collection will be available exclusively at www.backdrophome.com/Porsche starting today through the end of the year.

Porsche currently offers 180 shades through its Paint to Sample program, with the option to specify a totally bespoke color from a much wider pallet through Paint to Sample Plus, which requires extensive feasibility testing. These colors are in addition to the wide selection of paint choices Porsche already offers on its vehicles, including several non-metallic colors, and additional metallic colors.
