    While not the most staggering of all Golf R Spektrum statistics, we’re somewhat surprised at the rarity of Squirrel Grey. Just 6 Volkswagen Spektrum buyers opted for a color that’s equal parts unique and inoffensive. Perhaps it was the dull, pastel grey’s similarity to so many other colors that were then- and still are now- somewhat in vogue. Or maybe it was a symptom of the Golf R’s audience and attainable price point. Regardless, at just under $34k we feel this is a phenomenal value for someone looking to enter the world of Tailored Driver.

    Tailored Driver has covered the one-year-only Volkswagen Spektrum Golf R models in the past, but this one is a bit special. Sadly not present at last weekend’s gathering of R’s called “Wookies in the Woods” and held annually near Robbinsville, NC- where many Spektrums were present- this particular car has plenty of VW event history. The first owner of this Tailored Driver was VW themselves, one of three used by Volkswagen of America to market the program to potential consumers. Since leaving the VWGoA nest, this car made it to Texas where it still appears to be in very good shape and was driven sparingly. Between the fervor of Spektrum fans, strong enthusiast interest in VW and the Golf R, and the stunning Sarantos Turquoise paint, we anticipate this Tailored Driver to fetch a big number.

    One of the more rare Volkswagen Spektrum hues, paired with an old-school 6-speed manual transmission, this Golf R is an exceptionally engaging Tailored Driver at a fairly safe price point. So far as we can find, just three of these were ordered in the US (another 40 in Canada), so it’s also safe to assume you’ll be the only one at even the most hard core of Volkswagen enthusiast events.

    Why We Love It:

    We’ve covered Spektrum Golf R’s here before, and each time one pops up it’s admittedly somewhat of a surprise. Cult following, roughly 200 built for the US (33 in Viper Green), enthusiast brand and model- which is a long way to say “these things are sold before hitting market.” Yet here we have a Viper Green that was seemingly traded into a Mazda dealer of all places. Now, Mazda is a great brand with compelling offerings… but really? Perhaps if you scoop up this Tailored Driver, you can let us know what the previous owner walked away with.
